Hello!

My Kawai CA13 arrived today and it works perfectly, apart from one single key, the middle C-sharp. If I play the key while pushing it slightly to the right, it sounds just fine. However, if I play it while pushing it slightly to the left (for example when I play it with my right hand), it produces a scraping sound, and I can feel a difference in resistance (I suspect it makes contact with the middle C). I have read some similar things from some Kawai owners here (small flaws, but nothing big).

The natural answer is of course that I should return my product, but I hesitate because I bought it from another country. I might have to pay for the transportation back, which could be fairly costly. Also I feel that I could probably live with this small flaw, but it feels wrong to accept a flawed unit when I really should get one in perfect condition.

Is it worth the trouble?

Easy fix I'm sure. If you've bought from another territory then Kawai in your own country probably won't be obliged to help you with this (although they might I suppose) - but any decent tech will be able to make the tiny adjustment needed to make it perfect. It might even go after a few hours of play. Are all the keys level with even spacing?

Good luck,

Steve

Thanks for a quick reply!

I was also thinking that it may wear away. For now, I guess I will enjoy myself for a couple of days and see if there is any difference. I was not even aware that there are technicians for digital pianos (why wouldn't there be any, though?). As for the rest of the keys, they are evenly spaced and do not wobble.

simgjere, may I ask where you are based?

Even if the instrument was purchased from a large online retailer such as Thomann, the Kawai distributor in your country should still assist with support queries such as minor keyboard adjustments etc.

Kind regards,
James

Kawai James, I live in Stockholm, Sweden. The only place that represent Kawai here is Stockholm Steinway Gallery. That is where I tested the CA63 (they did not have the CA13). As you can tell by the name, they are not only selling Kawai.

simgjere, thank you for the addition information.

Please contact Thomann to explain the situation with the rubbing key.
I believe they may arrange for a technician to be sent to adjust the action.

Kind regards,
James

Should be an alignment problem with the keys. I think this happens a lot with the RM3.

Beneath the keys are pins that guide the keys as you press.
I had this problem with the middle C. Big gap on the right side, small one on the left.
The alignment of this key was awfull. After the technician took the key out we saw that the pin underneath was totally bent. Bending it back would not have solved the problem, as the tolerances of all other keys did´nt fit either crazy.
So I have to live with a key that travels downwards in an angle of 20° hopefully not hitting the key besides it mad

I think this is a major problem of the RM3 wood action. You have the wood but you also have the problems linked to it.

Another issue was the "wobbling" of the keys from side to side. I think Kawai should really take the time to check every excentric pin to be sure the keys don´t start getting too loose. I asked the technician to fix about 10 keys.
