Sep. 2008, I started taking piano lesson at age 43 with no previous piano education. Now after almost 3 years' hard working, I just passed the June BCCM Gr. 7 exam with the mark of 83. I still remember, three years ago, when I first started, I keep asking around about how far can an adult beginner go, and now I know it really depend on how hard you work on it.

Wow MsQQ, that is fantastic! That shows ALOT of dedication, sweat and tears to Grade 7. I'm especially impressed as you have had no previous experience - in general adult beginners who go to that level have had some prior musical exposure as a kid. I had organ lessons from age 7 - 13 and played hymns, just bored out of my tree and my theory book I was given was too advanced, so I quit, and never played again until I was 41. I wish I had done piano earlier. Well done, and are you going to continue with any further levels? Go for it.

Congratualtions for passing the significant mile stone. It's a good news to all of us adult re-starters and beginners. Thank you for sharing it in the forum.

Congrats! Out of pure curiosity, hope you don't mind me asking, which pieces did you choose?

Wow!! I just started lessons 2 months ago and have just decided to do RCM exams. I will be starting with Grade 2 materials this September. I have wondered how long it takes to get through the materials as an adult. Of course there are so many factors to consider but my biggest one will be one of time. With 2 young kids I have to work around their school and activities schedule.
I am very curious how much practice time you manage in a day/week can you share that with us?
That is very motivating to me that you can do more than 2 grades per year. Good for you!

This is a huge milestone and sort of "validates" your progress. A lot of us play graded repertoire here and never get tested. You took it to that next level, and that's a terrific accomplishment.

awesome work, I started in 2006 and am planning on taking grade 7 this year so that is very quick work. When i started i didn't even know where middle C was on the piano. The thought of playing grade 8 pieces fuels me.

I practise at lease 2-3 hourse a day. It's not like I have to practise, but I really got addicted to learn new pieces every week.

Congrats! Out of pure curiosity, hope you don't mind me asking, which pieces did you choose? Thank you everyone for the encouragement. For the exam I played the following: For Study: 1)The Toreodor's Song OP.169,No11 by Albert Loeschhorn 2)Study in G Major Op.139, No.71 by Carl Czerny List A: Little Prelude in F Major, BWV 927 by Bach List B: Sonatina Op36.No3,First Movement by Clementi List C: Venetian Boat Song(from Songs Without Words)Op.30,No.6 by Mendelssohn OR Nocturne by Ernest Marsden ( I took nocturne for the exam) Actually, for me the most challenge part is the sight reading.

I have wondered how long it takes to get through the materials as an adult. That is very motivating to me that you can do more than 2 grades per year. Good for you! Thank you for your comments. Actually my advice is not take any grade exam when we first started as an adult! It will slow the whole process down and we could easily get discouraged. I didn't learn the grade materials for the first almost 1.5 years.( but I spend a whole 10 month to properly learn the Gr.7 stuffs) For the first year and half, I just bought those EASIEST PIANO CLASSICAL PIECES and chose what ever interested me and start from there. Each lesson I got a homework for a half new little one or even just a few line ( but every week something new) along with that, I use the Henon book as technical material book, each week one. you are right about the time. I spend a lot of time everyday playing, sometimes 5 hours a day. When I were waiting to pick up my daughter, I dig out my flash cards to learn the notations. It's not like I have to do it, It's more like I am addicted to playing piano, and I also became happier ever since. Like you said, raising kids can be very stressful for us, and learning new melody every week can surely bring some excitement and happiness to out busy life. That's also one of the reasons I suggest not start doing grade learning at first, we want enjoy ourself by learning piano not bring more stress. I sincerely wish you good luck in the Sep. Exam. Christina

The pieces didn't look too difficult. I found out we have ABRSM here although very few people take it here in Bulgaria. However, I do not want to get discouraged if I fail, so I will wait till I feel confident in myself. Maybe I can start with grade 3 next year.

Congratulations!!! That is an awesome result. It is inspiring as well. I definitely hear you about getting addicted. I started playing as an adult about 10-years ago when I was 24.
Then after 6 months my work life changed and I gave it up for 5 years. I picked it back up for about another 6 months and the same thing happened. Now, I am working more hours than ever before, but last November I decided the itch to learn was too strong to leave unscratched, so I picked it up again and insisted on at least 30 minutes every day.
About two months ago I realized that I was sticking with it so I decided to increase my playing time and am now at about and hour and a half to 2 hours every day (I get up at 4am to play and then play at 9pm again before I go to bed). It is way easier to make the time to do it than I thought as, just like you, I am thoroughly addicted.
Congrats again!
