Bartok's Babe, no worries, you're "back on the wagon" smile
And missing on your BD is a good reason! Happy Birthday!

Welcome back Andy!
Thumper, your dates (talk about advance notice!) have been registered.

Well, I am on the excused list! I managed to play on my birthday, but then we headed up to the lake, so I missed yesterday (I'm going to put some pics in my bd thread smile smile ) I'll be sitting down to play shortly - once I get caught up on my emails and thank you notes!

Hi guys. sorry to report but I'm going to have to drop out. Just too much going on with work & family to properly practice everyday. Will try to jump back on the wagon in 2012....

Sorry to lose you Steve - but hey! You ARE the master of your domain - you've decided on other priorities.

Hope life balances out nicely for you in the near future so you can have some decent piano time!

I'm going to be away for a few days - leaving Thursday, returning Sunday. I hope to have time to practice before I leave on Thursday, & maybe when I get back Sunday evening, but for sure won't be near a piano on Fri/Sat. So can you put me on the excused list, please?

Sure Carol.
Check in when you are back and update with any modifications. For now I'll put you down just for Friday and Saturday smile

****************

A NOTE TO ALL : I'll be away for most of August, and will be checking in now and then for updates here. BB Player (aka Greg) will also be checking and making updates if I miss a few days.

I'll tot up my days of missed playing when I get back - at the moment I am not sure how things will pan out!

Taking the plunge:

Age: 54

Equipment: Yamaha PSR-260 and sustain pedal.

Goal 1: Play at piano bar for tips and drinks.
Goal 2: Play accompaniment while singing melody.

Best way to achieve Goal 1: Piano Magic
Best way to achieve Goal 2: ???????????

This is Day 1: Currently practicing chords and scales.

--What other method (or skills) will be common and won't conflict with PianoMagic?

FROM THE PIANOMAGIC SITE:
If your primary interest is to play accompaniment (harmony and rhythm) while SINGING the melody, I would not recommend PianoMagic.

Instead, I suggest for you to investigate every OTHER 'play by ear' course I have found on the internet. WHY? Because most 'play by ear' courses teach 'chord accompaniment' - separate from melody. In such courses, 'lead sheets' or 'fake books' are used to provide the chord changes you'll be using.

As a result, you won't be required to hear chord changes 'in advance', or understand WHY specific chords are used in the tunes you perform. In that setting, you'll be able to focus your entire attention on making the smallest required movement to effect a chord change, from one chord to the next.

Other courses considered:

I almost fell off the wagon! I had some time away for 2 days to go with my preschool class to catalina and did not even plan to do this, but ended up bringing my keyboard becaus ethe kids and teachers wanted me to play so badly! When do you ever hear of traveling with your piano while on a fieldtrip???
Hope everyone else is doing great!

When does sign up for MOYD 2012 begin? smile

Be careful about wanting to reach the top because once you are at the top, the only place left to go is down.

Clemente, if you want to start now, I think you can still sign up for MOYD 2011 until the end of September.

Really? I figured it would be too late for 2011. I was reading that the deadline for the 2011 was September of 2010... I think. So I thought... "Let me ask and find out if the deadline for 2012 is this coming September (next month)." ... But I never thought that 2011 was possible. Thank you! smile Can you tell me how the signing up is done? blush

Thank you, Lain!

Well, this is my enthusiastic willingness to join and be committed to the plan for whenever new applicants are accepted. I practice everyday just as I brush my teeth when I get up every morning and before going to bed every night... In between those two events, there is piano practice. smile

I'm back! Had a relaxing 2-days of beautiful weather at my brother & s-i-l's place on Vancouver Island, & arrived home late yesterday afternoon. I practiced for about 40 minutes after I got home yesterday, so I only missed 2 days playing (& forgot a lot, though it came back after a few minutes) There was no piano where I was staying, but my s-i-l has lots of sheet music (she plays guitar), so I "read" for about 15 minutes each day, & in the process found not-too-difficult versions of a few standards that I took in & photocopied to bring back with me. I put half stars on my practice calendar for those 2 days, so it doesn't look so bad on my otherwise perfect-so-far-since-New Years record.

Cheryl,

Please put me on the excused list for 8/12 through 8/22 when I will be vacationing. Alaska cruise from Vancouver, BC to Seward then a few nights in Denali before returning. I will try to get some piano time in on board, but we will just have to see how it goes.

That's it. Kaput. Finished. DOA. My dreams of MOYD for 2011 are no more.

So what happened? We got the lake house I mentioned some time ago. No piano at the lake house (at least for this year), and we've been spending SOOO much time negotiating the deal, traveling to inspections and closing--and, this week, PAINTING THE WHOLE INSIDE AND PUTTING DOWN NEW CARPET--that there has just been no time for my dear piano.

However, sitting by the oil lamp at night, sipping a drink with my sweetie, watching the ducks and herons on the water and the sunset over the lake--these things are just compensation for not practicing the piano every day.

I still have my DP at home, and I'll be playing intermittently, but every day ain't gonna happen. I'll be back. Just not in 2011.

Good luck to the rest of you.

I'm getting there--note by note.
