Just wondering how long people have been playing for? I first took lessons when I was about 19/20 ish, had lessons for a couple of years - until I had my first daughter. Then re-started my lessons in Jan 2010 aged 34. I'm loving it this time, having more time to practice, and really wanting to learn how to play properly! I'd love to get to grade 8!

What about you guys?

Started self-teaching in May 2009, then got a teacher in January 2010. No musical experience before.
Practicing about 2 hours daily and still loving it. I'm 58 this year.

I think you will find a huge spread. The "beginner" moniker is a bit of a misnomer here on the ABF. There are many rank beginners but also a lot of folks (like me) that have played on and off for many years but still feel more comfortable on the more "amateur" side of the forums. I started playing and self teaching about 40 years ago. I messed around with blues and rock but didn't take piano serious until about 14 years ago when I bought a grand piano and took piano lessons. Now I'm back to "self teaching"... but enjoying it greatly. Frankly I never gave much credence to the "grades".

I've been playing a little over 5 years. I started taking lessons at age 56, having never played before. I still have the same teacher and still love to play every day. I thought I would be able to play any and everything by now, but feel I still have so much to learn. I wish I could have started sooner, but still feel so blessed to be able to experience the joy of playing at this point in my life.

Nice post, Peyton, and all... and, that was a very interesting survey, Sam.

I too am an oldie who likes oldies!! I'll be 55 in September and I've been learning to play the piano for about 6 years... before that, I played the guitar, 5-string banjo and violin for many years. Having some musical background has helped.

Actually, I almost cut my finger off (index finger on my left hand) several years ago, which affected my playing the stringed instruments to an extent; this kind of lead me toward the piano... The stiffness in my finger doesn't seem to affect my piano playing.

Oddly enough, I saw a "Dr. John" (famous New Orleans blues piano player) interview a while back and the same thing happened to him… he was initially a guitar player and got in a fight at a bar in New Orleans and in the struggle got the end of one of his fingers on his left hand shot off… it too affected his guitar playing and he started playing the piano.

I wish I could play as well as Dr. John!!!

All the best!

Rick

9 months and counting! I can't believe it's been almost a year. Somehow, I thought I would be further along than I am. I have learned a lot, but I find that I am still cannot read music proficiently. I play a piece better once I have memorized it. I am having fun though. I really look forward to playing every day.

I'm 50, and I restarted piano about 2 1/2 years ago, though I've taken several months off here and there to wander off and play Irish traditional dance music on the tin whistle instead.

I had maybe a year of piano lessons when I was 9-ish (I don't remember all that clearly), during which I learned to read music and play very basic hands-together music. I remember that I completed the Schaum "Red book", and was graduated into a Czerny book that I found so deadly dull that I lost all interest in playing, and was fired from lessons shortly after.

When I restarted I began with the Preparatory Level of Keith Snell Piano Repertoire series. Now I seem to be most comfortable with pieces from level 2 of a variety of repertoire or method series, stuff that's labeled Late Elementary, though I enjoy stretching with material labeled Early Intermediate.

Please step aside. You're standing in your own way.

I've played guitar for around 40 years. Like most guitar players I know, self taught and peer taught (eg show me how you ...) and don't read music. I wanted to play piano for almost as many years and about 3 months ago I got one and have been self teaching, via online material and books, at the same time capitalising on what I already knew.

Guitar since 1966. Piano (Kawai DP80) since 2011.

Interesting survey - thanks -clearly it never too late to start learning!

I find it easier to play a piece of music once I've memorised it. I can't wait for the day when I can put a piece of music down and just play. I'm amazed by people who are able to do this. At the moment each new piece of music I learn feels like climbing a mountain! It's a very slow process, but such an achievement when I get there!

I'm taking exam (ABRSM) so I have something to work towards - I always wanted to play when I was younger but my parents couldn't afford it. So I'm making up for it now and loving it

I started piano with a teacher in January 2011. I am 56. I have reached an early intermediate level so far. I played the violin for several years and I taught myself bass guitar. Violin and bass helped me read piano music. Also studied Walter Piston's "Harmony" on music theory, so I was well grounded to begin piano.

I want to play Chopin nocturnes. Right now I am working on the Muzio Clemteni sonatina Op. 36 No.1 as an assignment from my teacher. She is a college professor who has a few CDs out.

I also have an interest in TV and movie theme music. I am learning the Star Trek Original Series theme, and also the Superman Movie theme.

Took lessons from age 8 to 12, then didn't touch a piano until late September 2008 and have been at it daily, apart from travel days, ever since. I'll be 62 in September.
