This was recorded at the Nashville Jazz Workshop where I've been a student for the last 4 years. On bass is an amazing bass player, Roger Spencer. He and his wife, Lori Mechem also a wonderful jazz musician, piano player, own the NJW. This was part of a 6 week ensemble class we were in. We meet once a week for 2 hours, learn 5 songs in 5 weeks, then perform them the 6th week. Hope you enjoy!

Very nice!

Only wish we could hear the bass much better, but apart from that... perfect! smile

It should however be in a different forum : Members' Recordings.

Very nice, Zac! It always amazes me when I stack your recordings up against the time you've been playing. I wish were a fraction as gifted.

I know, it's astounding isn't it? I'm envious too.

Excellent, Zach. Hope to be that good.

You mentioned Lori Mechem. If anyone ever gets a chance to watch Scott Houston's The Piano Guy series Lori shows up once in a while and plays in some of his episodes. She is a great jazz pianist and well worth checking out.

great job, Zach!. i also listened/watched your video of Georgia on my Mind. some great improv lines. like everybody said, you are really figuring this out at warp speed.

you live in the greatest place for music i've ever seen. go into any bar, club, Belmont Univ jam session, whatever - and you will hear great musicians. I never grew up liking country music, but the couple times i've gone to the Grand Ol Opry, i was awestruck with some of the talent of the musicians - particularly the acoustic musicians. seems like a lot of 70's rockers and jazz influenced types drifted over to the country world.

have you ever listened to Beegie Adair? she's wonderful..

Thanks everyone for the really kind comments. It means a lot hearing it from other fellow piano players.

Bruce, funny you mention Belmont University because I live on Belmont Blvd right across from Belmont Univ. You aren't kidding about the talent in this town. As for Beegie Adair, my wife and I go see her with her trio (Roger Spencer who's her Bass player) over at F. Scotts here in town...she's incredible!

Zachary,

I'm sure the same extreme focus you had that made you a successful rider have greatly benefited you as a pianist. It's great to see someone approach things with such dedication. Kudos.

Zachary,

Since I am not much of a jazz player myself (as it can be tough stuff unless you have the knack/gift for it), I can really appreciate hearing a good performance, like yours in the video!

Well done!

Zach: good, clean playing, esp considering how briefly you've been playing.

The ensemble, though, has just a little student tentativeness and overseriousness. I wanted the horns to phrase more emphatically, and the rhythm section to be looser, free-er, more driving. Improvising in public can be very stressful and inhibiting; once you've mastered your instrument and the musical genre, letting yourself go is the hardest thing to do but IMO the most important.

Ah, Beegie Adair -- a wonderful lady and a great artist. (An autobiographical note: in 1978 she recommended me for a gig in NYC which got me out of Nashville forever.) She wrote a beautiful pop ballad "Goin' Back to Barren County" which I've never forgotten, though she may have.
