Might it be that Mr. Ho is obliged to write a review that will be read primarily by those with only a casual interest in and perhaps not much knowledge about classical music? He says very little of any substance about the performance in his "review," but rather devotes most of his piece to who Ms. Lisitsa is, why students love her, and her elegant attire and graceful presence.

One hopes that Mr. Ho knows enough about classical music to write communicatively and informatively about it; it's a pity he didn't do so in this review so that we could have been more informed about the real content of this performance.

What purpose do empty reviews serve?

Regards,

BruceD

Interesting that this pianist is hardly known in Europe. Maybe it's because here we have far more opportunities to go to live concerts and listen to a far wider range of pianists from many countries than in USA?

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

"He says very little of any substance about the performance in his "review"..."

If you have to get it said in, probably, seven column inches, you have to make every word work hard, and not every writer can do this. Any hack of an editor can cut the guts out of a story, though, in no time at all. It's like the wicked stepsisters trying with all their might to make their big feet fit into the dainty glass slipper. They know it's not going in, but they want to make a show of it.

I got a little something out of the article, though: a nice little burn when I realized I missed hearing Valentina perform Rach 2 with the SFSO just 40 miles down the road... and it's because I gave up on it. Gave up on the late-evening commute in a suit and dress pumps and the smackdown at the Performing Arts Parking Garage, gave up on trying to hack my way through the SFSO's dense and time-consuming website, and long ago gave up reading The Examiner.

All for good reasons. Still, rats!

hehe... Call me up next time. I'd be very happy to provide a free ride for you to Davies Symphony Hall in order to take advantage of the carpool lane. smile

Her recent concert in SF was great btw. I'm so thrilled to get her autographed DVD of the 24 Etudes of Chopin.
