And they reflect the reality of how they actually sound. Many times an audio demo you hear online sounds different than what you actually hear back in person, but these are good. Nord's Pianos have come so far, and you get so much variety. Even better, they work recorded and live.

Hi Zachary,

I notice you have both a Nord Piano and an Electro 3. I have an Electro 3 myself. Apart from the obvious difference between the weighted and unweighted keys would you say that the piano samples sound pretty much the same when played on the Electro as on the Nord piano if no pedal is used in either case? The reason I ask is that while the organs and electric pianos on the Electro are great I have been underwhelmed by the piano patches.

The new recordings and using the Soundcloud engine does make the samples sound better. Thanks for bringing this to our attention Zach.

The Ravel with the Bosendorfer does sound quite good (but then so did the Grand lady D on the same piece when it first came out last fall wink ) .

The new Yamaha sounds less compressed and boxy then Studio Grand 2 that I used most often when I had the NP88.

The Grand Lady D--this was the one I found most *harpsichordy* sounding. It was less so when I recorded it then when I used it live with speakers.

Soundcloud does seem to sound better then most of these audio hosting sites. Maybe I'l start using it myself.

Amen, this is the one product which the user can reproduce how the demos sound like.

As far as I am concerned the NP88 is the closest thing to perfection, my only hope for it is it would last a long time.

Well, I don't think you'll have to worry about it for two fold:

1. As far as build quality, Nord's are built like tanks. Quality materials and construction.
2. As far as internally, well, this is where the Nord's are as future proof as they come. In the last 7 months Nord has released two new grand pianos and a software update. Not bad! Plus these samples get continually better in quality, as they should.

I actually think the new Yamaha S4 sounds as good on my Electro 3 as on the NP88. However, when going back and forth between the two, I instantly miss the dynamic pedal modeling string/sympathetic resonance of the NP88. I played an Electro 2 73 for a gig out in Colorado, and the new pianos in the Electro 3 BLOW them away. Nord's come a loooonnnggg way in their piano samples.

Yep, the NE2 pianos were pretty terrible. The NE3 is better in every way...it's just a shame we lost the granularity controls on the effects.

Here are some pics of my setups:

Pardon the arm pits! Walking bass lines on the Electro and soloing on the Piano:

This is the Trio/Quartet I play with. The venue plays silent movies in the background. Cool efect!

Great pics as always Zach!

So what voices (walking bass?) are you using on the Electro3 with your LH while the RH plays the NP88?

Cheers,
James

Zach, check out this concert from French hip-hop band 'Hocus Pocus':

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xeog10_hocus-pocus-feat-oxmo-puccino-akhen_music

The pianist is playing a Stage (Rhodes, Wurly, Clavinet, Piano), however you'll notice that there are two more Nords stage left - looks like another Stage on the bottom and a NE3 '61 on top... pretty good rig! wink

James that's awesome! Nords galore! I see 3 unless my eyes are mistaken. Do you still have your Electro 2 61?

Zach, yep, 3 Nords, although I believe the Stage+Electro combination were used for the previous band.

The Electro2 (73-key, not 61) is zipped up in the bag at the moment. I keep meaning to set it up next to my Electro3 to transfer some of the presets over, however I haven't played with the band that uses the organs recently.

Cheers,
James

Thanks for posting the link James!

I'm no fan of Hip Hop really, however, the allure of 3 Nords on stage at once was enough to get me to click the link......... and just over an hour later, having watched the entire concert, I'd have to say I'm gonna be taking a MUCH closer look at acoustic hiphop in the future.

Damn, that was an extremely tight live set! Especially the awesome horn section with some wicked solos!

Well worth the watch and I got a little dose of keyboard-porn too.

Siriosys, glad you enjoyed the concert!

Well, I stumbled upon it, to be honest... the live show was broadcast on French radio, and somehow a recording found its way onto my iPod. I didn't even know how the band were, but decided to look them up after being quite impressed with the acoustic arrangements, tightness of playing, and the great keyboard sound. Then I found the video and was chuffed to pieces that the guy was playing a Nord.

Great sound from the Nord Stage - being able to set-up the splits to have a Rhodes in one section, and a wah-wah Clav in the other would be awesome!

The guy on the keys makes the playing look so effortless, and the clean, tight riffs sit so nicely in the mix...I clearly need to work on my technique, while also brushing-up on my French! wink

Cheers,
James
