Hi everyone. I have a digital piano that I have owned for about 2 years now, and it has worked perfectly until about 2-3 weeks ago. I have just moved and was using my keyboard and after a few days of using it like normal, it just suddenly turned off while I was playing it. And now it won't turn back on again. Before this it had shown absolutely no signs of damage or degraded performance: everything was working perfectly and then it just turned off like it was a power outage. I have verified that this is not an issue with the wall socket it's plugged into (which can power other things without issue).

So I'm not sure what the problem is, but I'm considering getting a new power cord because that's the easiest thing to replace. Everything else is internal integrated circuits and I'm sure very complicated. Does anyone know if it's likely to be a power cord issue or am I SOL and have to take in the keyboard itself for (much more costly) repairs? I would just go buy the power adapter now, but I don't want to spend $20 on it if there's zero chance of it improving the situation.

The keyboard model is Yamaha YPG-635, the power adapter is model PA-3C.

Thanks.

It is worth replacing the power adapter. Those things can die, just like that. I am assuming you have the wall-wart/inline transformer type. Yep, those guys can just go MIA on ya. I've lost many laptop chargers this way, and while I make no promises, a faulty external PSU (adapter) could be the cause.

Make sure you get a power supply with the EXACT SAME SPECS regarding voltage. Incorrect voltage can fry your piano. Then you would really be S.O.L.. As long as you get the same model, you shouldn't really have to worry about that.

Hi Daral,

And welcome to the forum. I think it's most likely the power adaptor, and about the only time to be grateful you have an external transformer is .... now smile

Buying a new one is probably cheaper than schlepping it into a repair shop. If you have a voltage tester, you could always check whether the adaptor is putting out juice. If it is, it could still be failing; if it's not: there's your confirmation!

Good luck,

Jonathan

ya the ac prolly fried it's coil. Take it on down to an adapter place and have em get ya a new one. I think they run around 30 bucks or so, depending on what ya need.

Ok, thanks everyone. I will try buying a new one and update this thread with the results.

Daral, there's a second hand store close to me and they have many second hand wall warts from various devices. I've bought several for merely fifty cents a piece.

If you do not already own an inexpensive volt-ohm-meter (VOM) consider spending ten dollars or so and buy one. Not only can you measure voltage, which could indicate whether your present wall wart is defective, but you can also measure continuity which comes in handy when trying to learn if a cable is defective.

Keep us posted on what the source of the problem was.

Well I went and bought a new power adapter a couple days ago and it works! So it appears that the old power adapter simply burnt out, which surprised me because I had only used it for about a year and I thought they typically lasted longer than that. Anyway, the new one works so life is good.

Daral, if the piano only stays at home, you're set. If you take the piano out on jobs consider buying a spare.

I would also consider buying a wall wart that has greater capacity (though the same exact output voltage).

Electronic components can die at any given moment due to a variety of not always easily identifiable reasons.

I'm glad it was simply a power cord issue, because the next step was to have the internal power supply of the digital piano replaced, which would have cost quite a bit of money for the part (if you can even find it) and the labor to have it replaced.

Glad it all worked out! smile

Started playing in mid-June 2007. Self-taught... for now. :p
