Has anyone tried Bolcom's short piano pieces (can't remember the exact title) with kids? I got this book, and it has some charming pieces, but I am not sure if my students would go for them.

Working on:
Chopin: Barcarolle
Schubert: Sonata D959
Rachmaninoff: Daisies
Lutoslawski: Paganini Variations for 2 pianos

Edit: I'm sorry. The collection I'm referring to is actually by Seymour Bernstein. I need more coffee:

Are you referring to Monsterpieces? I save them for the kids with overactive imaginations!

(Gee, anyone remember when most kids had overactive imaginations?)

Um........My head was in way too many different places (work-wise) over the past week. It's what happens when you freelance, I guess.......

Yes, Monsterpieces is by William Bolcom. Not Seymour Bernstein; I must've been thinking of his Racoons, which is a wonderful set, also.

I find that the more self-directed students are, the more they will put effort into pieces that are in this kind of idiom. I choose not to tell them whether or not they should "like it." But kids with an imaginative bent do end up accepting and liking the pieces after they've spent time with them......the others will just feel that the pieces are "wrong."
