Hi Friends,

I am going to buy a used Clavinova CLP 170 in polished ebony finish. I would like to know where CLP 170 actually stands in sound quality & feel among all Clavinovas. I know its a strange kind of question but to be honest I can only afford a second hand DP and I am a beginner so I would like to know from people who have played CLP 170 that how good it is compared to newer models like 300 or 400 series. Just assume that CLP 170 is brand new, how much do you think will it cost now in market compared to newer 300 or 400 series ?

Thanks

First introduced to the market in 2002, so it's fairly old as DPs go. GH3 keys which are a plus. Looks like a 3 layer sample with sympathetic resonance and key release samples, and string resonance effect. Something goofy going on with the "virtual soundboard" microphone thing, which could be interesting (or not). 16W x 2 + 20W x 2 speakers and amps. I've never laid eyes nor ears on one, but I'd hazard a guess that the sample set is perhaps on par with the P120, which was released in 2001. How much is the seller asking?

It is for 1000 British Pounds or 1700 USD but most people said that it is better than the new CLP 430 because of its sound and on par with CLP 370. It is in perfect condition and polished ebony. It has got completely new keyboard (replaced). It has iAFC which only top models like 280 and 380 have got. 170 was the flagship model but still I want to know more about it. Thanks

What was the reason for the entire keyboard replacement? Was it performed by Yamaha or an otherwise reputable outfit?

Also, electronics don't last forever (particularly electrolytic caps, and some of the earlier Flash wasn't so hot either). A new DP has a warranty and some promise of hanging around for a while, an older one can go at any moment. I'm not saying don't get it, but just something else to worry about when buying used stuff.

I personally wouldn't buy a 10 year old DP unless I was getting an incredible deal on it and really needed it.

Yes, Yamaha replaced it...I have played it too and it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful too and looks in perfect condition shining. But I want to know how does it compare to other newer models like CLP 300 series and CLP 400 series...

From the specs I'd have to agree. But remember the P120 was replaced by the P140 which in turn was replaced by the P155 and the P155 sells new for $999.

Paying more than $999 for something like a P120 seems like maybe you are not buying this piano for its sound but for the cosmetics of the case and stand.

I'd offer the seller some amount that is less then a comparable new piano. If he does not accept, buy a new piano. Look at the YDP range of new Yamaha pianos too. Do not pay more for a 10 year old CLP then you would for a comparable new YDP or P series

The OP discussed this piano in an earlier thread.
CPL170 thread

The used CLP170 was offered for 1000 GBP, around $1700 USD.
The unit is comparable to the CLP330, but a bit less expensive.
Still, the price should be negotiated a bit lower, I think, mainly because of its age. (I think the OP said the keyboard action of the unit had been replaced recently.)
