Question: What would be the ballpark figure of the weight of the cast iron plate from an old American 5-ft grand? The overall dimensions are about 54" wide by about 48" or so front-to-back. I'm thinking about 300 lbs.

Thanks,
James

I'm just guessing. A baby grand weighs around 600 pounds depending on the brands. So i think the plate would be more like 350 or 375 pounds.

Very few small grands weigh as much as 600 pounds. A Steinway M is under 600 pounds. My 5' 4" Mason and Hamlin is under 500 pounds.

I stand corrected BDB.

It would be interesting to know the ratio of the plate weight/structure. Half the weight of the piano? More? Newer pianos have much heavier cabinets due to the MDF they use.

Steinways are typically lighter than most pianos I believe?

I'm guessing, but I bet the plate accounts for around 70% of the weight, at least.

Well, I've moved many pianos over the years, with and without the plate in them. 70% would be the limit I guess again?

I know that the M&H BB is almost 1100 pounds, but it has a full perimeter plate. I don't think that the B does though, just the regular shape.

Thanks all for your imput. This gives me an idea of what I will be dealing with.

My 5' 4" Mason & Hamlin is a T, not a B. Bs probably have heavier plates.

Really? I've never heard of that one. How is it different from the B?

My 1887 Steinway A weighs 675lb - not sure how much of that is the plate though.

Paul.

Closer to about half that.

There is considerable variation in how much iron various manufacturers threw at their pianos—some were/are considerably lighter or heavier than others. For a 5-ft grand I’d guess the weight of their plates would range from a little under 150 lbs for a well-designed, light-weight model up to, maybe, 250 lbs for a thick, crudely-designed, “full-perimeter" model. Most of them are probably in the 150 – 200 lb range.

I just put up a winch with a track and trolley so I weighed a few plates I have in the shop. to make sure it would safe.

A Baldwin 1911 5'6" plate 218 lbs
A kranich & Bach 1912 5'3" plate 212 lbs
A Kimball 4'8" plate 195 lbs

Thats without the pin block and tuning pins.
