I've sent this in an email, but I in case you didn't get it....

Dear Fellow Piano/Music Loving Travelers,

Yikes!

The countdown clock on the Piano Forums shows only 10 days left until the
official start of our European Piano Tour!

I can't wait to meet all of you in Germany.
I'm so excited I can hardly stand it, and I'm not one to get excited easily:-)

By now you should all have received the keyboard luggage tags and name buttons we sent.

It is of course your option if you want to use the tags or not, but I would like everyone to please bring
their Piano World name badges.

I presume by now you've all made your checklists, and practised packing.
Just in case it might be of some help, I'm sharing my checklist with you here:

Passport
License
Cameras (still and video)
Cell Phone
Chargers for Camera, Cell Phone
Lap Top (with power cord)
Adapters (for U.S. 120v plugs to European 240v plugs)
Verify chargers and laptop can run directly on 240v (chargers will say something like 100-240v)
Euros in various denominations
Notified credit card companies about trip abroad (so they don't freeze account)
Medicines in original bottles (with pharmacy, my name, description of meds)
Stop Mail (have held at P.O.)
Set Timers on Lights
Neighbors watch house
Bills paid that would come due while gone
Glasses (regular, computer glasses, sunglasses)
Plane Tickets (or reservation print out for e-tickets)
Reserve parking space, off airport parking
Install Skype in laptop
Pack clothes and check weight of luggage
Keep list of important phone numbers in wallet or at least in carry on
Headphones (for plane)
Sheet Music?
Waltz of the Asparagus People Book (or Piano Girl) for Robin to sign (or buy one from her in Germany)
German/English Dictionary
Clean Out Fridge
Set temperature to 78 (for those of us who live where it's hot)

Check the special tour members only forums for other suggestions
http://www.pianoworld.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/49/1

If you have anything you'd like to add to the list, I will be posting this in the special tour members only forums.
Feel free to reply to the post with any additional suggestions of what to bring, wear, do, etc.

For those of us who have never been to Europe (raising my hand), and/or have not traveled much
(raising my hand again), here are some words of wisdom from a good friend of mine who has traveled extensively...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We are packing a positive attitude.
We will bring an open mind.
We are going to have fun.
We are not going to compare, but to observe a different culture.
We are going to admire new ways of doing things.
We are going to eat, drink and be merry.
We are going to make new friends.
We will NEVER say "it is bigger or better in America"
We will admire different lifestyles.
We will look for what is right.
We will praise our chefs, our guides, our driver, our escort and our hotels.
We will share our smiles with everyone we meet.

We are going to admire another culture. And to learn. And to accept the differences. And to enjoy the wonderful people we will meet and the unique experiences we will have. We are not going to compare, we are going to appreciate the differences between each country. We are going to make new friends. And try new food. And bring home priceless memories. Think of going to Europe as a treasure hunt. :-)

Have fun, that is why we are going.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All The Best,

Frank & Kathy

Ann mentioned a security wallet, the type you wear under your clothes.

Good point. I purchased one the other day at Target in the luggage department.
It's called a Waist Belt, and it has room enough for a passport, cash, and credit cards.

So THAT is where the extra lbs that you see in the photos will come from, right?

I'll have to check your list Frank. I so wish I didn't have a major plant sale this weekend and all the estates to buy for and plant their annual gardens.

I can't wait just to be there!

From Jim Orr:

Stop newspaper delivery.
If the person feeding your cats won't water your plants, you might just water them, and put them
(the plants, not the cats) in a bathtub, out of the light, covered with some plastic (the plastic
you get from the drycleaners will work just fine), and they should last two weeks, little the
worse for the experience.
Scan or photograph your passport and send the image to yourself as an attachment to an e-mail.
(This means you can pull it down from your e-mail account if you lose your photocopy, which
you should also bring with you and keep apart from your passport.)
Do the same thing with your credit cards or credit card numbers, and also record the telephone
numbers for lost or damaged cards.
My cellphone company (Verizon) is sending me a Europe compatible phone to use for up to 30
days without cost* to me (except for shipping). They send this Fedex overnight. See if your
provider will do the same thing. The cost for using the phone is expensive, though (about $1
per minute). You still keep your US number.
Give Frank a list of emergency contacts for yourself back home, in case something should
happen to you on the trip.

*I would have said "without charge," except that would have started people wondering if the batteries
were uncharged.

I am s-o-o-o looking forward to enjoying and embracing the culture of the German and Austrian People. I especially liked Frank's comment on "Trying New Food". (Everyone remember that he said that!) Bring lots of cameras and prepare for many Photo sessions so that everyone on Pianoworld will get instant downloads of what fun they are missing.

Can't wait to see you all in Hamburg
bis Sonntag!

CNN has an article this morning on taking travel photos:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/05/27/take.better.photos.matador/index.html?hpt=C2

Also, my grandson (who's a German major in college) downloaded "Leo" on my new phone. If you type in an English word, it will give you the German (plus the correct pronoun). I haven't had time to play with it and don't know if it works for phrases but it did work when I typed "red wine" (a must for me to order!).

Received this email this morning from Robin Goldsby...

Hi Frank and Kathy!

Great list!

I would also recommend bringing a warm jacket. It could be hot here, but Northern Europe in June can also be cold! My husband is playing an open air concert this evening (in front of the Dom) and I know he'll be freezing!

We are looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday the 7th. I will be there to meet the bus and take you to the WDR when you arrive from Hamburg. Frank, please have the tour operator let me know exactly when I should meet you. I am assuming we will meet at the front entrance to the WDR Funkhaus, Wallraf Platz. This is a Fussganger Zone (Pedestrian Only Area), but the tour operator/bus driver will know where to park. It's a short walk from the bus area to the Funkhaus. There are lots of tour buses in this area every day.

The French Brasserie at Schloss Lerbach has been blocked off for us from 3-5 on the 8th. I will do my little performance and then we will have a small reception. Or maybe we'll have the reception first, we'll see. This is so generous of the hotel! And we MUST get a photo of the group on the steps in front of the castle!

Have a safe trip and we'll see you here!

xo
Robin
