the interview and charles rosen in general are fascinating. i chuckled at this:

"I don't remember this, but I was told that I first heard a piece by Debussy when I was five. I'd been brought up on Beethoven and Wagner. And I was furious and apparently said there should be a law against it. But the fact is, the great monuments of modernism are impregnable: The Rite of Spring, Erwartung, Wozzeck."

Thanks for the heads up on this article! His books aren't the easiest reads but they are chockfull of nice insights.

"There is still a question about how long the modernism of the 1950s is going to last. The problem is that in order to absorb any difficult style you have to hear the pieces several times. That was true of Mozart, most of whose work was considered difficult at the time. It was even worse for Beethoven, then worse again for Wagner. Strauss was worse than Wagner, and then Schoenberg and so on. You really have to hear them well played several times, and there are very few music lovers who've heard a piece by Boulez more than once. [without falling asleep or walking out]
