In a 1999 issue of International Piano Magazine the reviewer discusses about 60 different performances and lists Brendel, Richter, Horowitz, Bolet, and Arrau as his favorites.

Good friend of mine has well over 300 performances; pretty scary.

I've only ever listened to Kissin and Richter, but of those I prefer Kissin. In part because his playing just seems to resonate with me, undoubtedly also in part because I listened to his first and hence, his performance is the 'definitive' one.

The first recording I heard of this sonata was by Artur Pizarro. Even after hearing many other recording, I still like this one very much.

But probably that's just because it's the one that shaped the musical ideas of this sonata in my head.
