Thanks knotty, I just downloaded the 30 day trial. I found Transcribe essential for learning the solos.

Nice work custard! This is my opinion only, and not to be taken too seriously as I'm a beginner myself. But it just struck me that you don't use much repetition while improvising, and that you could do. Do you have Metaphors for the Musician? Randy has a discussion about repetition and some exercises there that look really good. He says one of the limiting factors is the ability to listen to what you have just played. Ok, you played them, but do you remember the last 3 notes you just played? Yes? So then play them again, only finish the phrase differently this time. The trouble I had was getting this to work over chord changes, but it's still an interesting idea. Maybe it would work more easily with shorter lines, as knotty suggested yesterday?

Hi Laura That's interesting that you didn't hear repetition. I wasn't going to post this one as I thought it had TOO much repetition !
No I don't have this book although Knotty had also mentioned this book. I should have bought it for my holiday reading.

I heard phrase-shapes being repeated, is that what you mean? I was thinking of shorter-term repetition.

Cus,
I think you did terrific on this. Repetition is a skill like any other and you can make it a point to practice it. If you wanted to use repetition, you would choose a shorter line, and for example, copy the rhythm, or the notes, or the shape and move it up and down.
For now, I think it's more important that you move to the next key, whichever it is, and then the next pattern.
Also, as you start getting comfortable in a key, feel free to move the metronome up a few notches. Up to 72, then 76, 80.
Before each new key, you can choose to do a few composed lines. Shouldn't take too long to write 8 measures. Also, if you have the time, you should keep doing the tune compositions.

great improv on the Eb prog. Don't worry about nuttin at this point. You got it, just let the music flow in phrases of different lengths and forget about it:)You can try intentionally creating short phrases for awhile, then long only, then put em together. Don't obsess much about it, you are doing great and almost there - 3 more progressions to go and you're done, on to playing on tunes for the rest of your natural lifespan. I'll celebrate with you with a free skype lesson when you get there!

Sorry, have it hit on one of those things that's unspeakably easier to say than to do?

Geez, I like your composition. I played it several times and like it better each time. It really grows on you.
Nice playing too. I see you stuck with the triplets on Love Line rather than Dave's 8-16-16 and you seem to have changed the rhythm in measure 8 on the F7.
And really, really nice singing on the blues.

10,
Perfecto. As far as singing, you can switch octaves as needed. Clearly it's not always easy, but remember, you can do it slow.

Thanks for the comments, time flies. You got me, I hadn't listened to Dave playing. He trips over those triplets and it sounds better. Easy fixed. I did change the rhythm there in bar 8, and also the repeat, as it just seemed to want it.

if you listen to the track for lesson 13, you'll notice that those dotted 1/4 should be played short. The dot should probably be above the 1/4 note rather than after it.

DF Thanks Dave for your advice. I can't wait to do Ab maj_F min and then G maj_E min. This might take me a month in total. I'm looking forward to our next lesson a lot.

++ Thanks Knotty for your clear explanation of repetition. Re speed, I will do my Ab one at 69 and then my G one at 72. I'm looking forward to composing over Lesson 7 Topsy. But should I tie up Very Early first, and my arrangement on When I fall in Love ?

Custard that was really good. To me, the most exciting thing is your amazing progress. Thanks Time. I used to stress big time over not sensing myself improve. But then I read "Letters to a young poet" by Rainer whose advice to the aspiring artist was: "Being an artist means not numbering or counting, but ripening like a tree, which doesn't force its sap, standing confidently in storms, not afraid that summer may not come." So now I just enjoy the journey, confident that improvement will come, without me forcing it out.

Thanks for the wonderful Ranier quotation. I'm with Norman. And I suspect it's what Dave had in mind for JOI.
