Am looking to buy an upright piano, maybe new but likely used. Researching before looking and trying to get enough info so the shop dude doesn't scam me.
Used to play on a Yamaha upright years ago and am wanting to start playing/take lessons seriously again. Price < $15k AUS.
Anyway..when you test drive a piano, what features can be modified by a technician and how much variability would you expect, assuming the piano is in good nick and can be fiddled with, within reason.
Touch? Tone?
Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

I would assume that regulation and voicing would be the most likely things that you might "need" done (or not).

A search on those two topics ought to keep you busy a long, long time. cool

As a rule, neither touch nor tone can be adjusted significantly in a piano. A used piano might have more potential for change, just because it's not in best shape to begin with.

The bottom line is you shouldn't count on promises of being able to change a piano into one you like.

Buy one you already like.

Cy- for a moment there I thought you were talking about spouses laugh I guess you don't believe that it's just a matter of kissing the right frog?

I think Neitzsche's quote is apropos here "when you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back"

Actually Crampy-I'm not sure anyone can add to what Cy said.

There are indeed some truths that hold across multiple disciplines... smile

This is probably the best advice I've ever read on this board.
