A friend of mine who is a teacher/performer has asked me to work on some two piano pieces with her. I suggested we think about something by Piazzolla, and she seemed very interested. My suggestion was made in relative ignorance, however. I have since listened to a wide selection of this material.

Does anyone have thoughts or experiences to share about his two piano works? Keep in mind that I'm a lapsed pianist. I have decent, though rusty, technique, and I have not practiced continuously and systematically for some time.

And? what did you think after you listened to a wide selection?
Called her right back up and suggested you should stick with a more traditional fare? I know I would have. smile

I don't know about his two piano works. But some of the arrangements can be fun, such as El Retrato de Alfredo Gobbi or Adios Nonino. There are also some piano duet arrangements of things like Libertango that wouldn't take too long to get into.

This is an excellent idea!
I wished I had friends who made suggestions like that. However I am condemned to play these kind of pieces all by myself. frown

Libertango might be a good start though. There are some fairly easy arrangements out there.

Be aware that the interaction between musicians is what makes Piazzolla's music the most interesting. His music is semi-arranged/semi-improvised, so your feel of the music is more important than being faithful to a score.
So why not come up with your own interpretation of some of his pieces?

Some of them seemed a bit .... out there. Rapping on the piano, for instance. I liked Adios Nonino from the opening bar. It's also mercifully short. Libertango looks like a lot of fun. But I wonder what level of difficulty most of this work represents. I'm not out to torture myself, and I would like to be able to master whatever I start. On the other hand, I'm not into simplified arrangements.
