So I might end up blushing by even asking this question but I'm new here so cut me some slack!

My history of piano lessons is quite eclectic. I had 5 different teachers - some basic home teachers, some highly skilled professionals. My lessons were sporadic from the age of 4-16 and in increments of anywhere from 6 months to 1 year with a teacher. I also self-taught quite a bit. I am a fairly skilled pianist but how would I know what level I am?
I didn't even know there were piano competitions until I started reading this forum - I didn't grow up in an area where that was even something available.

Do a graded exam maybe?

The most accurate method of determining your level would be to use a repertoire level guide, such as Dr. Jane Mcgrath's book.

However, tell us some of your repertoire, and we can get you into the ball park.

This has just been posted in another thread and could give you an idea of your level...

I'm not sure I even have a "repertoire". I just enjoy sitting down and playing from my books - start to finish! I had a very -- "Free Spirit" sort of piano education.


Some of my favorite pieces to play:
Sonatina No.1 in G - Beethoven
Sonatina - Muzio Clementi Op36 No.1
Fur Elise
Turkish Rondo (Piano Sonata in A, 3rd Movement) - Mozart

Digging around on the internet tells me maybe I'm a level 4 or 5? Which it appears the levels go up to 8 - so I'm guessing that puts me at an intermediate level? Mostly I just play for enjoyment and do get to accompany various school or church choirs. I recently started teaching piano lessons too - but so far all my students are beginners - so that is good.

Bethany, you are doing the right thing by asking questions and doing searches. I have learned a lot about music and teaching that way.

I would highly recommend getting regular lessons again if you are starting to teach. You will want to continue your progress in order to better serve your students. If you look at the link ChopinAddict gave, you will see there are technical and theory requirements at each level, too. This could help you structure your study and know what to have your students do.

What you play is your repertoire! FYI, these selections are generally considered lower intermediate level.
