I've been tempted by the Kurzweil SP3X board because of its keyboard aftertouch, which I used to use when I owned a PC88MX. Has anyone any experience or comments on this keyboard? Thanks

Perhaps a PC3X is a good alternative - the remaining units are really cheap to get these days. It has the Fatar TP40L keybed and is in all options (sound, polyphony , controls etc) much better than the SP series. Hard to find a good keyboard with aftertouch these day's isn't it ;-)

I was on the same quest but ended up with the Kurzweils in the lower region as an option, or a much more expensive workstation like the MotiF series, M3, Nord stage or (coming) Kronos. I therefore reluctantly dropped the aftertouch as a must, because I didn't need an expensive workstation, just a stage with AT. There aren't many options left :-(

We must be dinosaurs for wanting the AT - a dying breed...

Yes, I guess a reasonably-priced DP with aftertouch might be too much to ask. I used to lay in strings behind vocals using the aftertouch and thought the Kurzweil strings were better than the Roland (FP4). Do you have any thoughts about that?

Well , if you're interested in strings I would definitely go for the PC3X over the SP3 - the stage piano version (SP) is very limited compared to the PC3 in terms of amount and quality of sounds, polyphony , effects and controls. Don't know much about the FP4 strings, but I can't imagine they are better and that the FP4 has more variations that the PC3, so it's a save bet. The Kurzweil AP sound may not be the most sophisticated these days, so you should see if it's OK for your means. Don't forget to update the PC3 to the latest firmware too, if you get your hands on a unit. You can download these updates for free from the Kurzweil site...
