Does anyone know anything about the quality of this piano? It is a DG2 5'10" grand. I've heard conflicting reports about it. I'd really appreciate the help. I can't come with anything on the web about this company. Thanks for your help - mel

Check the "Fine" piano book. There is some info in there on this piano.

My experiences with Sojin pianos isn't good. They were near the bottom of the Korean manufacturers, and none of them were very good in the 80's.

I bought new in "1986" a 5'10" Sojin piano (because of the price). I still own and enjoy playing this piano.
I am a piano tuner, and within the past 5 years, I have tuned well over 1,000 pianos. I started at the tender age of 18 (took almost 40 years hiatus from tuning while following anither career), I am 75 years of age.
This Sojin is a fine quality instrument ,and as compared to the Yahama, Kawia,etc of those years. is better that some, and on scale with most of the others,,,)
I do not understand why amyone would say otherwise unless that have a bone to pick.
Tell me WHY THE PIANO IS INFERIOR and why I could be so mistaken?

I had a chance to hear a well known brand baby grand (better known than Sojin) and on the same day a Sojin grand of the same size. The Sojin was a little out of tune, but the tone was sweeter and more gentle than the first one. My daughter's piano teacher said she prefers playing on the Sojin partly because of the tone, but mainly because the action isn't as stiff and difficult to play on as the other grand. I wish I could remember the brand.

Jay, having some knowledge of Sojin through an associate who sold quite a number of them, the problem may be inconsistency of quality rather than a complete lack of quality.

Hence melbent's comment about "conflicting reports". All the Asian piano builders--Yamaha included--went through periods of dubious or inconsistent quality during their developmental years, so I wouldn't discourage someone from buying a Sojin altogether unless a technician had examined a particular model and actually found something seriously problematic.

Having a well-recommended or PTG-certified piano tech spend some time going over a used piano before you buy it will cost you relatively little, but is worth a great deal in the long run.

This is really weird...your first post and it is a critique on a post I made 7 years ago!

In the 80's Korean pianos had a lot of quality control issues. They were very inconsistant, much like some of the Chinese-made pianos today.

Of the brands made at that time, Young Chang, Samick, and Sojin, Sojin was the worst.

I'm happy that you and some others had a good experience with Sojin, but generally they didn't hold up well. On the used market, they do not have as good a re-sale value as the others.

Can I ask how your first post ended up being about a comment from 2001?

You may not find much given that they went out of business in 1991 I believe. As you see, there are varried opinions. Mine is you should keep looking. While I am grateful for anyone that got an acceptable Sojin, I never saw one.

Key bushing
Flange pinning
Plate bolts stripping
String rust
Tuning pin torque
Cheap brasswork
Poor finishing
Lack of color fastness in wood-look and white
Warped action frames
More?

Actually the Daewoo Sojin 5'10" scale was designed by Lothar Schell though in time.....a short time proved to be of the disposable category having a short life span of 20 years or so.It was one of those pianos that unless you were a tuner/'tech one couldn't afford to own it after a while. I thought back when,it was no worse than the early Samick(Horugel) or the early Young Changs. So.....it had a solid mystery wood soundboard

Steve, as to the subject of a poster replying to a topic from 7 years ago.... I suspect that he searched for something, clicked on this topic in the search results, and ended up replying to it.
It happens to me too occasionally. A couple months ago I searched for something (although I now don't remember what), found a post about a string breaking on the OP's Bosendorfer grand, and replied to it. Turns out that the post was about 2 years old.

Interesting how you downgrade one brand while, what a coincidence, you have some of YOUR pianos for sale. Humm, politicians, used car salesmen and now piano salesmen? The "Golden Ear" mentality. "Only I can lead you to the Golden Fleece". Nope, I won't follow you anywhere especially into your store.

I find it a little unusual that you joined Piano World only yesterday (03/20/2011) and you have resurrected two very old threads to add your comments. Most new members usually have a question the first post or two, (as I did when I first joined PW) instead of brining up a 10 year old thread to offer rebuttal to an opinion expressed several years ago.

However, stranger things have happened…
