I have recently run across a Yamaha WX-7 upright. According to the serial number it was built in 1987. So, there is age to this upright that I am concerned about. Also, I am finding very little information about this model. Could anyone educate me on this model and what to be aware of on a piano of this age.

What I do know is that it is 52" tall and has an "X" bracing along the back. It is a predessesor to the U5.

Any information would be helpful.

High end Yamaha vertical. in some ways an upgrade from a U5. 99& sure it's a grey market....imported into the US as a used piano. That means you should be cautious, but not afraid.

Twenty-three years old is more than enough to warrant an inspection if the piano delights you. If not, why take on the expense?

Member pianobroker could give you the specifics on a comparison to U5 and what should be checked out in any inspection. If he doesn't drop in on your thread, send him a private message. He's under pianobroker in the user list at the page top.

What's the asking price?

Turandot,
Thank you for the response. A very reputable dealer called me to let me know that the WX-7 was traded in for a grand. Their technician had the action removed and inspected the internals. The sostenuto pedals works fineand it sounds wonderful. So far it checks out. I will have a local technician take a look at it once it arrives.

I have seen it on Ebay and Craigslist for $7,000 and $7,500. I was able to purchase it for a little less than that.

Refer to your thread on the piano-technician's forum. I could have copied and pasted my recent post but I didn't.. wink

One other thing. I would not refer to it as the predessesor of the U5 in that there was at least a decade lapse between the two mdls.

The WX7 is a fine piano but due to the lack of model recognition, it's value is lesser than expected considering how much $ they were when new. 7K-7.5K for a preowned one is WAY high. But what do I know? Dealers need to hit home runs every now and than. grin

Awesome piano, better than a u3 in my opinion

Grey market, most likely, but who cares

If you like the way it sounds and plays and it fits your budget get it

If your unsure of its durability hire a tech to check it out
