dp69,

Six K is fairly typical in south bay. Some times higher or lower depending on wind velocity and direction, and various astrological readings . . .

It is normal price. Anything below 6K for U1 is good.

Thanks for all your replies. I will be closing my deal very soon. Is there anything negative about the Yamaha U1 that I should know about??

The price sounds "impossibly" low. It's a great piano with the bright signature Yamaha sound that millions love. No negatives unless you dislike bright pianos. I assume that is not the case.

Yamaha U1 in CA is such a commodity, like selling peanut.
The buyers there are usually from certain ethnicity and they are so well informed about the price, therefore, the dealers do not have too much room for negotiation. If the dealers do not take the normal price there, they will lose the business to other dealers. In other parts of the country, the price is not that well known so that it is easier for dealers to make more profit.

The new Yamaha U1 is not bright like in the past.
I tried two of them in Nov, they were so lovely.

Rather than worrying about paying the absolute lowest price, and making sure you paid lower than anybody in the history of the piano - why don't you try to buy the best piano at a given budget?

Have you tried playing other pianos? I'll bet not! As a suggestion, why don't you take the new edition of the Piano Book (pianobuyer.com) and go listen to all the pianos that are listed as comparable to the U1. If you do that, I am sure you can find a comparable piano for a lower price than the U1. Or is it simply the name YAMAHA that you are looking for?

If that's the case, then why don't you get 50 of your friends together and make the guy an offer like others on this forum have intimated they have done. For 50, you probably can buy the piano for less than wholesale.

I have no intend to pay the absolute lowest price in the history of piano.
As you can see from other comments, $6k is a normal price in CA.
I did check out other pianos, but I like yamaha U1.
I don't understand why are you making this comment and suggest me to do a 50 people group purchase.

6k for Yamaha U1 sounds like fabulous price. Looks like West Coast has better prices. I am in PA and happened to visit a local store the other day and the sticker price for U1 was 9,999.

Can anyone in PA/NJ/DE share info on what the street price might be?

Thanks

Seems to me like the original poster is trolling a ficticious price to stir up the water .. get a few people to say "Yes, that's what it should sell for" then go beat the dealer up with it.
So glad I'm out of the biz.

I am amused by some of you that think buying/selling pianos should be some sacred rite, and should not be just as competitive as any other sale/purchase.
It is somewhat like the discussion of whether amatuer players should try to tune their own piano.

Buying a piano is business. No different than buying cars, stocks, or real estate. Buyers should treat the transaction as business, with due care taken at all turns of the purchase. While the many nice and honest dealers who pose post on piano world would like to be your friend for life, the reality is that they are in business as well . . .

Anything a buyer can use to beat the seller into submission is fair game, just as any sales tricks the piano dealer uses to lull the buyer into submission and close the deal . . .

When the clueless piano shopper walks into a dealership, the person coming at them with the grip and grin smile, lime-green sansabelts, shiny white loafers, dusting cracker crumbs off a yellow tie is the enemy, a highly motivated sales-pro, and should be treated accordingly . . .

Hmmm--I just wonder how they will sound after a year or two. Fighting brightness in a Yamaha can be frustrating.

I will not be able to tell you, because one of the pianos is played only one a week, and the other one is played by a little boy. Therefore, it is not a good test. I also wonder after a year or two how these pianos sound. I wish the two pianos sound the same after two years, but I doubt it.

I'm sorry for challenging the poster but this is not accurate.
This poster is just fishing for information by throwing a price that was not given by the dealer.
The authorized Yamaha dealer in San Jose does NOT sell the U1 for $5,800.00

In this case, OP is doing a great disservice to those sincerely shopping for best piano at best price.

Plus putting in shock those who had paid much more for same piano before. Not nice feeling...

To resolve this, I would immediately buy the U1 for stated price and post/demonstrate this find right here for proof!

Congratulatory notes to swiftly follow after...

Wanted to update everyone on my Yamaha U1 purchase. Finalized the deal at $5800.00 out the door as mentioned before. Already took delivery of the piano and happy to say that we LOVE it!! The kids love playing on their new piano and we are happy to see them play. The Yamaha U1 sounds awesome!! Great price and great service, A+.

Sure!
14 minutes after I posted; abruptly appears the OP saying I purchased the piano.
Interesting!

I don't know, Kurtmen, when a Kawai dealer starts telling us what the price of a Yamaha won't be, folks might get the impression, who knows, that there's collusion or price fixing going on . . . and why would anyone believe what one of your competitors told you in the first place? (Or have you been shopping for a U1 your own self?)

Anyway, db69 didn't say where he bought the U1 . . . Maybe thirty miles north-east of you he found one's been sitting on the floor for a while . . .

No dealer is beholden to a price quoted on a chat room and the more you seemingly jump up and down demanding proof the more it might give the impression that you're the one that's trying to manipulate prices . . .

I don't know why a competitive dealer's knowledge of price would be any more supect than the word of a non-industry non-insider who writes:

"Six K is fairly typical in south bay. Some times higher or lower depending on wind velocity and direction, and various astrological readings . . ."

I mean, are you present at the point of sale of most new Yamaha U1 transactions in the south bay area? Do you bring your anemometer and astrological charts with you? laugh Your blanket statement lacks credibility coming from your stated non-insider perch.

Your 'one sitting on the floor for a while' explanation seems plausible, but the OP claims it's a fresh 2011 manufacture. Actually, the OP specifies the brand, model, year of birth, and price. (Such a kind service for the readership here! thumb ) Who knows? Maybe the OP took in Fresno Piano's closing sale. Maybe his shopping cart was right behind yours and Kurtmen's in the checkout line. Is Fresno 30 miles away or more?

The potential for mischief is great in these [hello/goodbye] [I'm just looking/I bought] inquiries on PM. You can damage Yamaha retailers and Kawai retailers with the same stone since many price-first shoppers are amenable to either brand. "Look, honey! We can get a U1 for just a bit more than that K3 that Kurtmen showed us. Let's check it out."

Maybe Kurtmen's antennae are picking up false signals, but I'd say there's a reasonable chance looking at the OP's entries here that Kuretmen's finely-tuned antennae are detecting something bogus. I'm glad he has the guts to ask the OP to verify.

Now it takes guts to harass a new poster? Maybe you can put Kurtmen in for a medal . . .

The prices I heard recently on my great bay area piano shopping tour gave me the impression that 6k was doable . . . my impression was warehouses were not exactly empty of this particular model . . . it is not an unreasonable price by any stretch of the imagination . . .

If low prices quotes an a chat room, whether true or false, give the shopper an edge or an implied edge over the piano retailer or makes the retailer sweat or work a little harder for someone's business or makes the shopper consider other brands and proposals, all the better . . .

And Norbert calling for transparency from a new poster, now that is rich . . .
