I know there are five species of counterpoint, but I know there is a 6th also because this professor from the university told me there is one. He wouldn't tell me though and said to come back to him once I found out. I have looked in numerous textbooks and online, but I cannot find one mention of it. So I decided that I would ask PW and its infinite knowledge.

p.s.- He is not lying to me or pulling my leg because he was my old conductor in the youth symphony and youth symphony conductors and conductors in general cannot lie. (serious face here) wink

p.p.s. - I am not crazy either, but I just would really really like to know.

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. I just have to laugh at how ridiculous the above is.

Good luck finding your answer.

If it exists, it's nonstandard and obscure.

Clearly, but is it like ten thousand notes against one or is it a joke like silence vs Glenn Goulds humming. Idk.

"It" isn't anything. Doing some google searching, there are a few references to a sixth species, but it means different things to different authors.

Whatever it is, I'm sure that the fugue in Alkan's "Quasi-Faust" qualifies.

Look at the second page, third paragraph and come back to us. I'd like to know if this is what he meant.

Sounds like a reasonable theory. The Jeppesen text is fairly popular.

Holy cow. I've toyed with the idea of going back to school for a music degree just for the fun of it after I retire from teaching. But if that's the rulebook for counterpoint, I think I'll opt for something less taxing, like proving the generalized Riemann hypothesis.

Well, I'd say that in practice it's less awful than it seems at first glance.

WOW Lots of free theory there if you go to the literature page. Thanks!
