I saw an ad at CL.
http://cnj.craigslist.org/msg/2253685025.html
I already contacted the owner and he will upload the pictures soon. He said that the condition is good.
I think that the price is good. But I am not sure about the model.
In Yamaha official website, there is no G2 model. Is G2 similar to GC2? Is it good?

Thanks a lot.

I think the G series is an older model, but I agree that the price is good. Yamahas seem to have a very good resale value… even the older ones. And, in my view, they are nice pianos.

Even at that price, though, I’d have a qualified tech take a look at it before any money changes hands.

Is this a scam? That price seems too good to be true.

My gut reaction is that listing is probably not real-- no useful information, no phone number, etc.
...or someone's trying to get rid of it in a hurry
...or it is need of repairs.

The owner replied me with his available time and phone number. He said that he posted at work, so did in rush.
Please give me more comments on the piano. Thanks.

The G2 was 5'7". The current C2 is 5'8". Like the C2, the G2 was a pretty good "workhorse" piano. But at 25 years old, this one may very well need some pretty extensive work. Have a piano tech look at it. At $2,500 it might be a very good deal.

Hi,

Well, you've gotten great advice so far, and my advice on buying a piano is worth about what it cost… but if you are looking at pre-owned, and if you have a limited budget, you have to go with what’s available in your area.

Sure, the C series Yamaha would likely be better, newer and more expensive than the G series you are looking at. But, in my view, condition is everything.

Not everyone who would like to have a nice grand piano can afford to pay $20K, or even $10K. Of course, the more money you have to spend, the newer, better piano you can buy.

Good luck!

Rick

The G series of Yamaha pianos is a very fine series. At one time they were the top of the line for Yamaha. Yamaha came out with the C series later and ran both models simultaniously for a while. In used pianos, condition is everything, and not everything that glitters is gold. A shiney surface doesn't mean a good condition piano. Let's face it, a Samick looks pretty much like a Steinway on the surface, but under the hood they are very different in terms of construction. That being said, it seems well worth the money if the condition is good.

Thanks everyone.
I will post the pictures after I get them. Could anyone teach me how to attach pictures in the post?
I saw an icon "enter an image", clicking it, it shows 4 options. Shall I choose "insert a non-floating image"?
Thanks.

Don't fret. Might have been a good piano, might not have been. You can't tell if it's OK without having it checked out by a technician.

In my experiences, a great deal on a good used piano doesn’t last long at all… it is first come first serve, and pretty fast at that. In fact, a lot of used piano dealers will snap up a bargain on a pre-owned piano pretty quick.

Keep looking, keep educating yourself, and keep your fingers crossed and be prepared to act quicker next time; but with the same precautions… have it checked out before you buy (if possible). In some cases, a bargain price on a used piano might warrant taking a gamble and by-passing the inspection, but just be aware of the risk.

When I was looking, I always had the phone number of a mover and a tech handy, just in case…

Good luck…

Rick
