Yay! Know why I'm so excited?

Both of our post counts just increased. wink

But seriously, you seem to be sincere, whether you are a bit radical in your manner of posting or not, so I am curious to watch your video.

Thank you for doing that. I believe it really is the better thing to do (to edit it out).

This is an outrageous thread! I must admit, I like you, Karl! I wish you the best! It seems though that your hands will quiver with all of those rotations going on... I'm so curious!

Why do all of these Taubman testimonials sound/look like 3AM informercials? I would be very interested in learning more but it's hard to take them seriously with proponents like "humble" Karl and commercials like this.

What I gather from that video:

- Maybe the method is good for people with short pinkies.

A tip: Ouch! the very first octave G# should not be banged like that. Don't strike them from that height but just exert your fingers from the surface of the keys.

Your hands look pretty good otherwise. Of course you're still far from really making music...I figure you're just learning the notes. Remember this is not an etude.

Besides what jazzyprof said: Look at what the slurs are. You're playing as though there's a separate slur after every 2 beats, but actually they go on longer. Think of each slur as an unbroken unit.

Anyway, this is very decent playing, but it looks like "regular" playing to me; I don't see that it illustrates Taubman or any other particular method. It's just decent intermediate-level playing. Keep it up, and bravo for being brave enough to post the video.

Even if you did drag out the preamble way too long. ha

I didn't see the rotation. Oh yeah, I forgot, it's invisible. Good job!

You're probably still learning the notes and its decent considering that. However, you've got a long way to go with this piece (as have I). Since the rotation is "invisible", this video serves absolutely no purpose.. so much ado about nothing, in the end.

Wow, I would have thought that this thread would be full of Star Wars pictures or references to Nazis by now. Or maybe I missed that part, because I don't think I'm going to go through all of it. If it's as relatively civilized as the last couple of pages seem, good job.

I think that anyone who can play the Fantaisie-Impromptu up to tempo pretty decently, even if not a finished product, deserves to be called something more than intermediate, but I am not at the august heights of technique many of you call home. It's rare to hear this piece played really well, and Karl looks to be on the way toward that at least.

I would like to know a couple of things :
- How long has it taken to get this piece to this stage?
- What performance level does KP think he has achieved at this point with this piece?
- Where does KP think that this piece needs to go, now?
- How would he accomplish the next stage(s) of work on this?

I will refrain from any comment about the technical level or the "interpretation" of this performance until I know answers to the above questions. Such comments would be in relation to answers to the above questions. In light of the history of this thread and the final appearance of the video, I think these are reasonable questions on my part.

That said, may I offer a tentative thank you for posting this.

Regards,

Yes, I agree with your criticisms...

My phrasing and dynamics and range of emotion and expression is not great in this video, actually...

My Taubman teacher is still helping me with shaping the melody and controlling the subtle things...

Regards,

I learnt the notes to this piece several years ago, and worked on it with a teacher for a few lessons...

I picked up the Fantasie Impromptu again yesterday, practiced it for 2 hours, and made this video.

I don't think I have achieved performance level.

I think I would need to memorize the notes, work on my phrasing, dynamics, and other things, and also the rhythmic difficulties of 4 against 3.

To get something up to performance level is a pretty big process for me, and right now I'm working on other things with my Taubman teacher.

Double rotation will almost always be invisible... its a small motion.

But you should just believe me that I was trained in double rotation, and I'm doing them.
