Hey all you Yamaha mavens. I have a bit of a mystery piano. It's an M500 45" upright with the numbers M500 QADC and a serial number of 221936. Looking at the Yamaha website it looks like this number of upright was made in 1962 but the owner swears he purchased it new in the early 90's, plus the piano looks much more early 90's than early 60's. It's in excellent condition with bright white felt on the hammers with very little grooving and a quick light action. It just doesn't look like a 45 year old piano. Any insight? Year of manufacture? Location of Manufacture, etc.

That piano was assembled in the now defunct Thomaston, Georgia factory. Yamaha assembled the consoles and studio uprts. at that facility. Yamaha eventually moved there Georgia operation to China. The serial # database does not follow the regular Hamamatsu,Japan database or the former Everett database /serial #s
The piano was assembled I believe in 1996ish in Geogia. My Pierce Atlas at hand only goes up to 1996. The serial # should be preceded via a "T". The piano was 44" tall

There is no T proceeding the serial number, but everything else you say makes perfect sense. Were these considered good pianos in the Yamaha piano lines of the time?

There is a reason why the artist level Yamaha uprts.(U series) and all the grands were assembled in the Hamamatsu,Japan factory. The professional series Yamaha were aleays going to be scrutinized more so than the beginner/intermediate furniture criteria mdls. Actually I believe the cases for the consoles may have been manufactured in the states assembling them with the Japanese strung backs.
Disclaimer: I'm not a resident Yamaha expert though there are a few here Steve C.? Chris V.? Marty F.? wink
