Just wanted to post an update. After a lot of thinking and testing and more thinking and more testing, I decided to finally buy the...........Kawai CN43 in rosewood!!

Taking stock of all of the very good advice on here and my experiences, I feel good about this decision. In case it may be of general interest to other forum members or of particular interest to any current/future folks that are contemplating a similar choice, I wanted to let you know why I think this was right for me:

- I was considering the HP-307 for a bargain price of $2,800 or the CN43/CA63/CA93.
- Although I loved the CA93, it was at the top of my budget and since I would be using it mainly with headphones, I felt that the innovative soundboard feature was not something I really needed (wanted - yes, needed, no!).
- The CA63 was a great piano but just did not excite me - can't explain why.
- The HP-307 was a fantastic deal(every dealer I spoke to acknowledged that it was a steal at that price) but the keyboard issues (thunking, ivory surface wear) put me off. And the limited audio file inputs/outputs and lack of any rhythms - though minor points - were a bit niggling.

In comparison, the CN43 had a nice touch and action that appealed to me. From what I can tell on here, the CN33 has been well received with good reviews that give me confidence about the pure piano merits of the CN43. I really like the mix of features that combine a decent beginner keyboard with fun extras, all in an easy to use package. The 5-year parts and labour warranty on Kawai DPs does impress me. And the CN43 was the least costly option. I feel like I negotiated a fair price with a local dealer that was a pleasure to work with. Unlike the HP-307 which would have been bought from a nameless, faceless chain store this dealer worked hard to develop a relationship with me and offered warm, candid, thoughtful opinions. He won me over with his knowledge, enthusiasm and sincerity. He also agreed to a flexible payment plan and I persuaded him to throw in a few books too. With the money I save by purchasing this model I can pay for more piano lessons which - as a beginner - will probably be more beneficial over the short-term than a slightly more refined action or enhanced sound. Also, if I feel the desire to upgrade a few years down the road to a better DP or an acoustic, it is an easier pill to swallow financially.

Once I have the piano in my possession (can't wait!) I will be sure to update the prices paid thread, post a few pics and let you know my first impressions.

sunnyg, thank you for updating the thread.

It's always encouraging to read about positive experiences with local independent dealers. These folks are taking a real beating from the internet giants and their cut-throat pricing, so kudos to you for supporting old fashioned principles of knowledge, enthusiasm, and sincerity.

Ah, and congrats on purchasing the CN43 too - I shall look forward to seeing the pics and reading your impressions.

Kind regards,
James

Thanks!

That doesn't sound right. I mean the 63 I at least remember that being around 3 grand when I priced em at a couple places.

Have fun with your piano. It's always more fun when you have that warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you got absolutely what you wanted.

This sounds a little bit contradictious for me... The big difference between the CA63 and CA93 is the soundboard. If you mainly use headphones, the CA63 should be your choice... So why did the CA63 not excite you? I can't imagine that it's just about the missing escapement feature?
