I recently sampled the 5'6 and 6'3 Estonia grands at a dealer and was very impressed. Has anyone out there purchased an Estonia? What kind of experiences have you had? My greatest concern is that I'm uncertain how it will age, given the fact that the pianos currently for sale have not been around for long. Any input would be greatly appreciated! (Thanks -- this is my first posting. I just joined Piano World a few minutes ago).

There has been quite a bit of discussion here about Estonia. Most of the comments I've seen from dealers, technicians and piano owners have been favorable. Use the "Search" function (there's a link at the top of the page) to find discussions about Estonias.

By the way, I bought my Estonia two years ago and couldn't be happier. I have no worries about how well my piano will age. A well-made piano using good quality materials will last a lifetime, frequently even longer.

Yep. Happy owner of a 6'3" Estonia that is less than one year old here.

Funny you should ask. My Estonia 190, delivered in February, was tuned yesterday. My tuner, who was the head technician for a Steinway dealer, gives it a clean bill of health--and actually likes it!!

Make sure that you try other pianos, too. Some find the Estonia lacking in power and brilliance. I happen to like the tone.

Concur with the above, try LOTS of pianos. And then there is always this other advise that generally goes with the above: Read Larry Fine's "The Piano Book" and its most reacent supplement. (Sorry... couldn't resist, it's like... some body just has to say it on this forum... laugh )

Also recommend making multiple visits on different days to play the Estonias to make sure it's not a one-day fluke that you find you like them so much.

Personally, I find the Estonias very good for the price they are going for.

Good luck!

Another very happy Estonia owner here; I've had mine since February, 2000.

My tuner/technician also admires the piano; his unsolicited comment most recently was that the Estonia is a very well-made instrument for the money.

I'm so happy with mine that when I re-locate to western Canada (long story, that some of you already know!) I will be replacing it with another Estonia.

Feel free to EMail me if you have any questions; I'll be very happy to respond.

Hey,

Estonia 6'3" owner here. Just got it in September and am suffering through this break-in/settle-in period because it so *desperately* needs a tuning etc.

It's a hunk-o-burnin' love, though, that much is for sure.

Good luck!

Cindy

Hi! I will chime in and say that I am also a very happy Estonia owner (5'8") with a PianoDisc installed on it, although I cannot speak with a lot of experience because I have only owned the piano for about a month. The only negative comments I have ever read regarding Estonia pianos seemd to be from people who just prefer a different sound from a piano. As others have already stated, don't rush into anything. Sleep on it, at least, smile and play everything you can get your hands on for comparison.

I just purchased an Estonia 5'6 this week, and I can't wait till it arrives. For me, the Estonia hat much more character than all the others in that price range.

I like the new Estonias I have played. They are mellow and very pleasing. If I had had the money at the time I was sampling, that would have been my choice. However I was short on funds and looked at lots of used instruments. Amongst those was an 8 or 9 year old Estonia. [It was in perfect shape as far as deterioration.] It was poorly regulated and sounded different from the current production models. Norbert seemed to think it could have been brought up to snuff. I was skeptical and did not buy it. So look first for new models. Estonia keeps improving! Older models may need work and they do use a different action.

This is in no way intended to disuade you. It is meant to inform.Current models are very nice. smile smile

I've had a 1998 Estonia 190 for about a year now with not one major issue. The keyboard shifting (for una corda) was a little sticky when I first got the piano and the movers broke off a hammer, but my tech fixed both problems easily.

The action is even more even-feeling now than when I purchased it; I guess I'm breaking it in! Also, the piano holds tune extremely well, my tech has never had to make more than tweaks during a tuning (3/year for me right now).

Yeah, I would be very, very surprised if an Estonia from that era could not be brought up to snuff if it hadn't been maintained.

Estonia pianos need very little re-affirmation or endorsements these days and we yet have to find one single owner who has not been thoroughly happy with his/her choice.

And while some of the models have been 'new' in the sense that they have been upgraded in many major ways over the last few years - Estonia as a country - is far from 'new' in building pianos.

Based on a over 100 years old tradtion, the country is actually blessed with an enormous amount of experience based on the genuine cultural appreciation of fine music and intruments.

An experience most people pick up the moment they happen to simply....

Just contact the company's president Dr. Laul through his website
web page

They will write you back with the name of your area's closest dealer!

Just remember to discount anything Norbert has to say about Estonias. He is in such disfavor with Dr. Laul that he never has any! cool

Norbert,

I know you love to poke fun at Estonia dealers in the USA that seem to have more than you, but we can't get enough of them these days. Almost out of stock in Philly... AGAIN! frown

I'm waiting for a shipment as well.

It seems Norbert's four Estonia's put him at the head of the line.

I have serviced three Estonia's in the home in the last 72 hours. All three have blossomed and are just singing their hearts out.

As long as Dr. Laul keeps the magic going I can wait.
