Hi everyone. I'm new here, and new to the piano. My father inherited my grandfather's krakauer bros baby grand, serial number 57081. He's letting me keep it, as I've always wanted to learn to play.

After reading some threads in this forum, I wanted to get some advice and find out how old it might be.

It hasn't been played regularly for about 10 years, so should I not bother with a simple tuning and bring in a technician first? Any advice is welcome.

I've put a dehumidifier near it (I don't air condition, and live in the hills of tennessee).

Anything else I should do right away? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Elisabeth

Elizabeth :

The Pierce Piano Atlas indicates your piano was made in 1934.

Yes, bring in a tuner/technician to see what the piano's condition and potential are. He can tune the piano if he determines that its condition warrants tuning and/or regulating, voicing and repairs.

Regards,

BruceD

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome to the Piano Forum.

Krakauer made a good piano in its day, but this one is now over 70 years old. The condition of this particular instrument is the critical factor.

Few 70 year old pianos are in good, playable condition unless they have had a lot of work done to them. That said, have a tech evaluate the piano, preferedly before you move it or spend any money or time on it. Their evaluation should guide you well.

Thank you both! Well, it's already in my house, so I'll have a tech come over and cross my fingers. My grandfather played for years and kept it tuned and well maintained, at least until the 90s.
Thanks again, it's very kind of you to help me out.
