Hey - I searched the threads and couldn't find anything, but I'm looking for info on playing black gospel style. From what i can find, it's your standard 7s and 9s, 11s, etc. But how do they get THAT sound? Any rules of thumb you can pass on? What are the standard progressions? Voicings?
I'm trying to harmonize a hymn and need some help!

I am so white.. I have had the opportunity to play with a gospel choir.. they get so frustrated with me. I suggest listening to a great group. I live in Kansas City in which reside some excellent musicians. Many gravitate to THE church on the east side.

My only suggestion is to pedal lightly.. otherwise I cannot help you.

accompanist/organist.. a non-MTNA teacher to a few

The book Gospel Keyboard Styles by Mark Harrison is a great reference.

http://www.amazon.com/Gospel-Keyboard-Styles-Authentic-Education/dp/0634037358

It has some progressions and voicings that you can stick into any gospel arrangement and sound like you know what you are doing. :-)

Hope this helps - good luck!

Thanks you all.

Erichlof, nice link - it looks like the mixolydian scale is the way to go. I'm going to give that a try...
