I'm a first-time shopper for a digital piano; my purpose is to replace an acoustic piano that we had in our home for many years but was destroyed by house fire; we are exploring the possibility of a digital piano; it would be used for our own entertainment in our home. Have found a used Kurzweil Mark 12. $2500. Seller states it is two years old. Is this a good deal?

Here is a prior thread regarding purchase of a used Kurzweil Mark 12 piano. It may be helpful.

Yes it was helpful. However, that discussion concerned one that was 7 years old; I one I am looking at is 2 years old. Any thoughts on that?

I have no other insights to offer. Others with more experience may wish to chime in. I had a Kurzweil PC88MX for about a decade, and replaced it with a Yamaha S90ES three years ago. The action of the PC88 left a lot to be desired. I do not know whether the Mark 12 piano used a similar Fatar action. Good luck in your quest.

Yes, they use an old version of a Fatar action...quite unpleasant and, in my experience, extremely unreliable. I had a MK 5 that had stuck keys because some substance at the factory had got into the pivot points and a MK 10 that just went totally haywire...the shop I returned it to didn't even bother to try to fix it, they just dumped it (the salesman later telling me they'd finished with Kurzweil due to all the problems).

Their home pianos are absolute pieces of rubbish. Buy a Yamaha or a Roland or a Kawai if you want a console or mini grand type of DP...there really is no other sensible choice.

Just my opinion of course!

I agree with this. I had a Mark 10 that I bought new and used for years. I loved the sounds and the very cool things I could do with it.

The keyboard sucked, after a while it got so noisy and clattery (is that a word?) that I donated it to a poor local church that used it for a while until they couldn't get the keyboard fixed anymore.

It's too bad because it could be an excellent keyboard.

For $2500 you can get a really nice new DP: I'm paying $1923, including shipping for an FP7F with a bench, the furniture style stand and a 3 pedal unit, and it's a really nice piano.

Why are you buying used?

Thanks for all of the recommendations. Why am I buying used? I've not made that decision; am looking at options. And please remember, I am a first time shopper for a digital piano so please tell me more about an FP7F. What is the manufacturer/brand so that I can look for it among area dealers? I do want to get my hands on the models I am considering. Thank you!

I LOVE Kurzweil synthesizers and workstations. BUT, they would be a lot better if they would get away from Fatar actions. They could be top of the line. The blame can go 50/50 -- Kurzweil is to blame for using a company with a touch-and-go product such as the Fatar TP/10 (and similar) action, and Fatar is to blame for not supporting or improving this action.

True story -- I have an '04 SP88X and a '99 K2600X. I can't order replacement keys anymore because Fatar doesn't make them and no one has them in stock. Luckily, I have a few spares and never really break keys, but what about everyone else?

Unfortunately, Fatar has tarnished the reputation of this very innovative company.

I'm wondering what you're looking for in a dp. If it's a replacement for an acoustic, then it seems you would want excellent piano sounds, a responsive action etc...

I just bought the Roland FP7F. I had a Yamaha YPG 635 which I sold recently, before that I had an acoustic grand and an acoustic upright.

Hopefully, you are close to some music stores. You should just go in to them with a decent set of headphones (or borrow theirs) and try the Roland FP7F, RD 700NX, various Yamahas including some of the CVPs and CPs, and some Kawais. It's a matter of personal taste, but in the $2500 price range you can find something really nice from all of the big 3, brand new, with a warranty, that you can try out.

I wish you luck! Keep reading threads, there are loads of them here with recommendations, but the main thing is to go play some pianos.

$2500 for a used digital is way too much, no matter how good it is or what it sold for new, because you can get good, new digitals with full warranty for less than $1000. To give you some perspective, I use a Williams Overture digital that I bought new sight-unseen online in 2009 for $600. This is one of the cheapest console digitals around and yet it is adequate for any playing, from jazz improv to the biggest concertos.
