I just found that this terrific movie is available in its entirety on Youtube. With incredible music by Ennio Morricone, it tells the story of a young genius jazz pianist who lives his entire life aboard a trans Atlantic cruiser at the turn of 20th century. He even has a cutting contest with Jelly Roll Morton.

The most famous scene featuring the song Playing Love:

The movie trailor:

Nocturne with no Moon, another great piano solo form the movie:

A Mozart Reincarnated, another piano solo from the movie. Kind of like Morricone meets Mozart:

If you're interested in the music(exactly as it is played in the movie) for Playing Love or A Mozart Reincarnated please PM me with your email address.

Does anyone else think the piano duel between 1900 and Jelly Roll Morton, although very funny, also seemed so silly that it didn't work so well? Instead of the over the top and basically absurd scene final performance by 1900, there could have been realistic playing at incredibly high level with the cigarette tidbits from both players also included.

Maybe they wanted to gear the duel scene to those not so familiar with realistic piano playing or....?

Pianoloverus: I just happened to see that scene the other day and thought the same thing. The “winning” performance isn’t very musical at all let alone enjoyable to listen to. Obviously we’re supposed to root for 1900, but all he did was mimic Morton’s performance of The Crave and then do the extended Czerny exercise while Morton played two of his best pieces. I also wondered about the portrayal of Morton – he would have been much more of a talker and have more flourish and braggadocio. Instead of portraying him as humorless and the contest as tense and serious, they could have had a lot more fun with it while still having 1900 win.

Also, the piano music from Legend of 1900 was published and I have a copy. As I recall it was hard to find (this was around 2003 I think) and my copy came from some Japanese distributor I believe. It's wonderful music, though.

"but all he did was mimic Morton’s performance of The Crave and then do the extended Czerny exercise"

then he lit a cigarette off of the burning piano strings wink
