I thought I'd drop a quick plug here for the new Western Pacific conference being held in San Francisco in early March. Excellent class lineup, good exhibit hall with plenty of tools and supplies to pick over, and a great city to visit.

Disclaimer: I'm the registrar for the conference, so sorry, this post is sort of self serving in a non-profit, volunteering sort of way. :-)

Don, I support your efforts and those of the rest of PTG involved whole heartedly. I may in fact find the time to attend myself and would love to do so, even if I can't.

Me and my wife Jean are looking forward to it! The "Iron Tech" reality show sounds like its going to be a riot! It's always good to see some of my long lost piano tech buddies!

Who else is going??

Ryan,

Yes, I was asked to be one of the "Iron Techs" but with being the registrar and also teaching, I thought I'd better be an observer.

Hey Don, you look like you could almost be one of those chef's in the picture on the front page!

I would love to come but, I'll be having knee surgery sometime in the next month or so.. Be off from work for at least a month or longer.

I would love to go since I have only missed a few of the PNWC conventions in the past 25 years.
Unfortunately I don't think I can swing a trip to San Fran this year frown

I did attend a conference a few years ago at this venue and I did enjoy the area.

Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the notice, Don. Apart from Rod, I think we can depend on the police line of usual suspects to attend. wink

Bill, please don't try to hijack this thread, stir up mud and turn it into another one of "those threads". As we all know, it only causes animosity and problems all round. In case you have not been looking, there is a thread very similar to this one, promoting a PTG convention. It has been locked into top position in the forum for about half a year. Obviously the powers that be must like it.... Relax..... Breathe....

See you at WestPAc.

I'm hoping to go, especially since I don't expect to go to KC this year ... just haven't registered (nor completely finalized the decision, checked the cost (registration + hotel (may get one offsite) + transportation), etc) yet.

Any idea when the specific class schedules will be put up? I do realize that last minute changes can and often do happen, but I would like to at least have an idea of what I can do at various times BEFORE I register.

Thanks Don. I plan on attending your party! I have places to stay in the east bay.
My cousin has a two bedroom flat in Oakland, Park Ave, that she rents for $100 a night. Really nice, kitchen, internet. Bridge fare or even BART to the airport. Fly into Oakland instead of SF.

I'm looking forward to the drive from Las Vegas. About 8.5 hours. Wer'e having a chapter meeting next week. I know of at least one more who's going and I'll try to see if I can make it a car load of tuners.

Also, I'll be doing a presentation with the San Francisco PTG chapter in Berkely the Tuesday night before the convention. It will be on the Kawai Millennium-III action, about the design and regulation thereof.

PM me if you want the location.

Don

Thanks Don & Jurgen. I had a moderator remove the portion of my post that may have been taken in a way that was not intended. My only point was that the "rules" as they are written and supplemented seem vague and selectively enforced.

I have more work than I can handle now and have to regularly employ and assistant but that is good for him and PTG because soon, he will be ready to take and pass his exams and hopefully become yet another RPT.

I have to take a trip to France for 6 days next month and although I will get a handsome fee for that, it will mean so much work remains to be done in my usual working area that I don't think I could afford to take the time for what would essentially be a vacation at that time.

I would love to see the contest, however. I would not be the one to ask to participate in that, certainly. I'm pretty quick at many regulation tasks, aligning hammers, tightening flanges, etc., but I would be quite slow at re-pinning, re-bushing or replacing a hammer shank. I do tie a quick and tidy splice, however.

I would like to see sometime in the future, a speed tuning contest in which I would gladly participate. I'm not at all sure how that could be managed, since it would be nearly impossible to have two or more people tuning at the same time.

I could see this scenario, however: Have a day long marathon of the tuning exam performed and scored as it usually is but with all times cut by a factor of 10. 30 seconds for Pitch, 4 minutes for Midrange, 6 minutes for the outer octaves, Stability scored as usual and 3 minutes for unisons, scored as usual. Any score under 80 disqualifies and the highest average score wins!

Each "exam" thus might take only an hour, therefore, depending upon how many pianos were set up for it, many people could participate over a one or two day period. All "exams" could have an audience but silence would be in order.

How about it?
