Hi All,

I am looking to buy a quality DP and have narrowed my search to two companies products. This post is regarding Kawai. One of my local music stores has an MP5 for $1100 and I see the MP6 online for $1500. What are the differences between the two boards and is the $400 delta worth getting the MP5?

Thanks in advance for any input.

John

If I'm not horribly wrong; updated sounds (some organ, EP simulation too), USB functions, ivory-touch and let-off. USB functions allow recording playing in WAV or MP3 formats, saving setups, having a backing track (sp) playing... That depends completely on your needs, wether you want it or not. Updated sounds are always welcome, and to me ivory-touch is the main interesting thing, if it adds bit friction to otherwise possibly quite slippery key feel.

I ordered MP6, but I was close to getting MP5 instead. Thomann just stopped selling those, so it was excuse for me to get the MP6 instead. It's not quite worth 400$ more, but I like those features and can't build a digital piano, so not much room to complain. If you are on thight budget, I think the MP5 is great choice. Might even want to hunt down an used one, as few may be upgrading to MP6.

I don't know if going for MP6 because of the sounds alone is wise, as MP10 supposedly has more detailed sounds anyway. Kind of makes the difference pointless, but that may be just my 'everything or nothing mentalility'.

General advice with the digital electronics is, that buy the little older product and don't read the description of the latest equivalent products and you will be bit wealthier, happier and ignorant.

John, Hemppa summary is pretty accurate.

Here's a list of the new features/improvements in the MP6, as mentioned in this thread.

- New RH action with let-off and Ivory Touch
- New PHA acoustic piano and electric piano sounds
- New tonewheel organ simulator
- New amp simulator
- Improved EFX
- USB audio (MP3/WAV/SMF record and playback)
- USB load/save sound/setup data
- Song recorder
- Metronome + 100 drum rhythms (with new stereo drum samples)
- Assignable MMC buttons

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
James

I have tried both and I bought the MP6. It is worth the difference. James is right about the differences. The piano, organ, Rhodes and keyboard are worth the diffence. I have had one since about October. (Had to order online) and keep finding neat things about it.

I appreciate everyones input. The research to this point has been intense. The MP6 is the only board I haven't been able to put my hands on so I'm really looking forward to spending some time with it when I locate one.

Thanks!

John

I would get the MP6. But, you have to choose what suits you the best.
