Oh boy! My vacation has ended! But, NOT before Santa brings me my presents!!!!

Took time to enjoy the morning……… and think about how lucky I am to have this great job where I get invited into people’s homes and join them in one of the focal points of their lives; music appreciation and learning to play music.

Now? Off to start the inventory count and then the yearend accounting process…………

Watched as my family opened their gifts. My wife,

Youngest girl is 9. Middle girl is 12.

My 22 year old son goes back to Groton, CT to finish his training in the Navy, then to Washington State.

Didn't get to see him today, but had him two days ago overnight.

Replaced keytops on an old Wurly spinet, came out nice. used the opportunity to teach apprentices how to do it, and it made for a pleasant chore, as they helped and made the work much quicker and easier. Then went to look at a Krakaur grand.. maybe a 6 1/2 footer and early vintage. Other tuners said it was not repairable, and could not be tuned, just junk it. Well, it had a nice voice and was WAY out of tune. Pins somewhat loose, but the real issue was underneath. The frame supports are made of 2 boards glued together... like heavy 2x4s in size. The glue had given up and the boards on all three supports had separated, one so severely as to separate horizontally and vertically. The piano was unstable. The pins that hold the plate in place fasten into these supports right at the joint of the two boards. SO, the piano harp is, at least at one support, not secured. The boards can be reglued and pulled back into place easy enough, and the harp supports reset. The owner either wants to repair and keep or perhaps sell. But in either case, I told him the support work needs to done before it is attempted to be moved or it will be just junk with a broken harp. Gave him a reasonable price for the job, would require 2-3 trips of 60 miles to get it done, piece at a time. Waiting to hear. Pretty sure the work will come my way as most other tuners have just run screaming from this work. Ha, I've handled worse. Christmas tunings kept me busy this year. A local church just purchased a 1939 Steinway from an aunt of one of its members and I had to tune it before last Wednesday. The piano tuned right up, and have to schedule a regulating day to go over the action, but not till after the new year. Time off till then, and then I start the college pianos.

Man there are enough blowers on that thing to choke a horse.....I am wondering if it is 3000BHP...gotta have a pretty tough truck frame to not buckle under that kind of power.....

Took a slow day today. My two girls and I went outside today and started building a dog house for our big ole galoot of a dog. One girl is nine, the other 12.

Thrilled to help me by handing me nails and screws.

Should finish tomorrow.

Had to get them out of the house and out of their moms hair for a bit.

This week is mental for me. Got 2 prospective DAR papers in somewhat order. ...
Oh yes genealogy is my sideline career, my mental effort, makes me craaaaazy
Tuning and art make me peaceful, so will hit that next week. sm

Chillin' today...I've had mixed experience in the past tuning the week between Christmas and NY's, and for the past few years we've just been taking this week off for vacation. This year, projects around the "ranch" are on tap.

Ah, but today I'm going to drift around the lakeshore and purchase expensive coffee to drink while looking at art galleries. Later for entertainment, maybe while pretending I'm Jerry Groot I'll say obscure things about chickens to local Cable television. He likes it when I do that.

Almost finished on a 1918 Steinway K action replacement. The original was infested with verdigris, and had some "interesting" repairs over the years. It sure is fun working with new parts! Today was such a good day that I'm going to take the rest of the year off...
