I am 'doremi' because I play scales smile
Had I progressed to playing chords,

I've owned many brands and the strings I am the most impressed with are those of Kurzweil. Nothing really compares. They use rich, subtle layers of flutes and even brass in some voices. However, their piano sound is not my favorite (though some do prefer them).

For the most part, the generic string voices you get on Yamaha, Roland, Casio, etc are more or less the same.

Kurzweil Favorites from the K2500 and K2600:
Dynamic Orchestra
Touch Orchestra
Huge Brass
Horn & Flute With Strings

The best strings I've ever heard on a stock keyboard were on some Korg keyboards - the Karma and N364 come to mind, but I'm sure some newer ones have even more beautiful sounds.

I'm not sure of what exactly we're talking about but here's a couple of sample libraries which are simply AMAZING:

and

quite expensive, quite hungry for resources, probably not what you're looking for, based on the replies you got, but can't help bbut mention them...
