After a long period of ill health,

and subsequently not being able to work as much as I'd like to,

I've begun wondering if a 'different direction' might be the way to go.

(my health is better now)

Things have changed for me over the last 3 years-or-so

(nursing my Mum mainly - she passed away in April),

and I'm curious about maybe going in a different direction (literally!)

If any of you good folks could give me some advice about the possibilty

of working as a piano tuner/tech in the U.S, for example,

I'd be very grateful.

(I'm fully qualified, with 28 years of experience behind me)

I hear that Australia has a demand for piano tuners.

We had a piano tuner here in Colorado who was also from Manchester. His first name is Rodney, I believe. I don't recall his last name. The last time I heard about him was several years ago. I have no idea where he is now.

Do you know who I'm talking about?

I'm afraid not... it'd be interesting to hear from him though!

Immigrating to the US or Canada is no small feat if you
a) don't have direct family or a sponsor and
b) if your occupation is not in very high demand (e.g. piano tuner)

One way to get around that is to have a business specifically request you for a position, after they have been unable to find a suitable applicant domestically. Another way is to have a big wad of money to invest in a new business, creating local jobs.

In this economy, my guess is that there are more piano folks out of work than businesses hiring new ones. A lot of piano stores have closed over the past 2 years.

Hey, that's a bit below the belt! Unfortunately also true... blush

The Boxing Day Test this (last) year was easily the worst cricket match I've ever seen.
