Some of you may notice that I just registered on this forum today. That's because I've been visiting this forum a lot to do research on what digital piano I should purchase, but today I thought that I should seek direct advice. So here I am. smile

A little bit about myself: I've been playing b-flat clarinet for eight years and tenor saxophone for just over five years. Last year I decided that I wanted to try piano, so my mother bought me a cheap Concertmate keyboard with a respectable amount of voices and I've been finding sheet music online to play for about a year now. Last month I finally decided that I want to pursue playing piano and naturally it occurred to me that I should invest in a full-range 88 weighted key digital piano.

There are many fine digital pianos out there, which is why it is so difficult for me to determine which one I should buy. First let me just say that my budget is just over $1000 US. I don't think I need to be spending anymore than that anyways because I'm not playing professionally just yet. I really enjoy the voices on my current keyboard, but I'm mostly just concerned about building my technique. I mostly enjoy playing contemporary songs, including movie songs and video game music. In addition, I want to be able to hook up the piano to my computer and use recording software to record my music.

I went to my local music store, Guitar Center, about a week ago and tried some of the digital pianos myself. The Yamaha P-95 was within my price range and looked very sleek, but did not have the voices (which again is not that big of a deal to me, just a bonus). The Yamaha P-155 had a nice feel to it with some additional features but costs $1200 which is a little on the high side for what I can afford. I did not have the opportunity to play on any other keyboard other than Yamaha, however, so I am mostly unfamiliar with other manufacturers.

I apologize for the lengthy post, and I'm looking forward to reading your responses. THank you and Happy Holidays!

I think the number one feature to look for on a piano is the quality of the key action. If you think the P155 has better action than the P95, most people would agree with you.

About all those voices,... If you are seriously studying piano al ou need is the piano sound. But if you do want more, use MIDI and your computer. With the computer it's literally unlimited and easy to upgrade.

You should always be able to get at least a 10% discount at Guitar Center. That takes $1,200 down to $1080 which might still fit into a "just over $1K" budget. The trick at GC is to know the a salesman's job is to close the deal NOW and not let you walk out. So you go in there an play the P155 untill someone notices you and asks if you'd like to buy it. Then tell hinm the truth. "Nice piano but I need $200 more cash before I can buy". He will offer you a load, say "I don'tr do debt, I'll buy after saving more" Finally he will be forced to lower the price and then he goes and checks what the store paid for it, Finds there is 15% to work with

But if you go in and say "I want to buy the P155. Oh by the way can I have a discount?" It does not work because the salesman does not need to offer discount, as the sale is already closed.

But don't try this unless you really, can buy right then and there.

BTW if you like the sounds in the keyboard you have now, you can use the old keyboard are a tone generator via MIDI. It's easy if the keyboard has round MIDI jacks, you'd need a computer in the lop in it has only USB.

Thumbs up on that one.
Walk in there with $1000 in hand.
Tell them you're leaving the store with either (a) that piano or (b) your $1000.
