Probably not most of us here. But I remember that Chopin forbade more than a certain number of hours per day (I think it was around three or four), because too much practice was harmful to musicality.

I think of that when I see Lisistsa practicing for 14 hours a day. I know everyone's mileage differs etc.. But I do believe that (regular) extended practice has a dulling effect.

I have no idea how many hours per diem "people here" manage to practice, but most of the musicians I know are not pros nor are they retired.. An hour a day seems to be prevalent, thus making progress and expansion of one's repertoire frustratingly slow.

Too much practice of the wrong thing, or done in the wrong way, can most certainly be harmful, and many people are at risk of injury from over-practicing in a bad way. I can happily state that due to laziness I will never be injured. smile

But that brings up another point, not in my favour. I think many of the piano injuries in the world come from sudden desperate bursts of practicing by people who aren't technically or physically prepared for what they are trying to do. "Binge practicing", like binge drinking, is extra dangerous because the person generally doesn't know how to handle the situation. I'd think that people who keep a steady schedule of long (and relatively healthy) practice sessions MUST be less at risk of injury, though I can't prove it.

I have been in the desperation practice situation before, and frankly opted to fail rather than risk injury.
