First and foremost to all, a joyous and peaceful Thanksgiving!

Does anyone know anything about the Rocky Mt. Amateur Piano competition in August 2011? I am interested in trying my skills in public for the first time and wondered if anyone has attended and what their opinion would be. Thanx J.

I've been a great fan of theirs -- entered the competition several times, had some of my best success there, and love the people who run it. The nature and flavor of it have evolved a bit over the years and aren't so much my style any more (a cynic could say it's just that I haven't done as well) ha but in any event it's a wonderful setting (Colorado Springs is gorgeous) with wonderful people, and well worth a try. smile

OTOH, I had a former colleague who moved to Colorado Springs, and after only few months was absolutely desperate to get out of there. I think the fact the she was a black woman married to a man from India, and that they didn't immediately join a church upon arrival (or even pretend to be interested) had something to do with it...

That observation raises so many questions, none of which, I suppose, could/should be addressed here!

Actually maybe we can, a little. smile

Colorado Springs is often thought of as a "conservative" community, and in some respects that's true, perhaps in part because the Air Force academy is there. Conservative is a funny word, of course; let's not get into the different meanings that it can have, nor whether some of those things are valid or really legitimately "conservative."

But anyway....I'm frankly surprised if our member's colleague would have had any particular problem in Colorado Springs from the factors that seem to be implied, and I have to wonder if perhaps that wasn't really it.

I have a niece who attends Colorado College in Colorado Springs. I'm impressed with the school's student diversity and fascinated with its educational approach. The curriculum is presented in block studies where the students are immersed in one subject at a time. There is less structure of when classes begin and end while It promotes field trips and individual participation and develops a well-rounded student.

I would have seriously considered attending this college had I known about it when I graduated from high school.

This piano competition has usually been held at Colorado College and it has been a wonderful place for it.

Probably not, but I felt I needed to temper the boosterism with a bit of reality as reported to me by someone who had lived there (which, to be fair, was some years ago).

How come they do not have a web site? I would love to read about it but I cant find a current website.

Try www.apiano.org -- I know that, a couple of years ago, they were having trouble with the site because a Muslim activist group hacked into it. However, I believe that's been rectified.

That is the correct site. The details or dates aren't listed yet, but should be similar to the last contest. I probably will start preparing for it. My teacher thinks I would gain some good experience from doing it. btw and OT, I finally have started to play from memory again. Can't be that would ever come back, but have two works already done. Thanx for all the info.(although) the description of the racial climate wasn't needed) J

I went to the Celebration (what they have in the off year) 3 years ago and was blown away by the interest and atmosphere. Couldn't wait to go to the competition 2 years ago. It was the 2nd one for me in my senior years. The age limit is 21 (as opposed to 31-35). This make a tremendous difference. I kind of vowed to not go to any more competitions where the age limit is so young. The organizer is definitely lax about keeping a really good web site running. Yon can get information by contacting CCabell463@aol.com.

Here's information about another competition in Golden, Colorado, also Arvada, Colorado, both near Denver.

Something that would be fun to attend.
