Hi,

I have actually an acoustic piano an I'm happy with it but I want to buy a digital piano for working late at night (and don't wake up my son).

I hesitate between buying a good controller like Numa Nero with Pianoteq or Linux Sampler and an digital piano. For a little cheaper I can have for example the YAMAHA YDP-161.

It's only to play with headphones and if my computer is powerful enough i'll can upgrade software to have better sound. If I no longer like the sound of the YDP I'll have to buy another keyboard.

What do you think ?

The YDP-161 (like almost all modern DPs) has MIDI out (just like the Numa controllers), so can use it to control Pianoteq (or whatever you like) just the same way.

The only thing you can not upgrade later (without replacing the whole equipment, that is) is the keyboard action, you should consider that.

Depending on where you live, the cheapest Yamaha DP with GH action is either the CP-33 or the YDP-161, so these are reasonable choices.

You might want to check some Roland and Kawai DPs, too. (For example, Kawai CN23 and CN33.)

Best wishes:

Csillag

Numa Nero is surely a great controller, with wood keys and "aftertouch". No other dp has this feature.

The only lack I see is the escapement... on other hand neither Yamaha keyboards you mentioned has it as well.

The aftertouch feature is completely meaningless if you are only interested in playing the piano. (The acoustic piano does not have this feature at all.)

On the other hand, escapement is something real. (However the importance of it is debated.)

If you need/want escapement, these are lowest models that have it:

Kawai: CN-33

Roland: HP-302

Yamaha: as far as I know, only AvantGrande - class instruments have it (and they are very expensive)

Thanks Csillag and Qbert, I should therefore find the more realistic piano action.

I've tried the STUDIOLGIC 990 and found it very interesting. If the action of Numa Nero is even better then it should be great. I also tried some Yamaha digital piano and found action very strange compare to the action of an acoustic piano. Maybe should I try KAWAI and Roland pianos.

Yes, you should try both of them, preferrably the better actions like RM3 (Kawai CA63, CA93) or PHAIII (Roland HP-307).
