Hi,

Being a French Canadian, I was recently acquainted with this man, a prodigy that lived from 1929 to 1968, being rediscovered by Alain Lefebvre.

Mostly unknown, after some research, I quickly realized that this child was a genius...

His first composition was at the age of 3 and gave his first recital at the age of 6. At 7, he was invited to study the piano in Paris with Alfred Cortot's first assitant, Madame Giraud-Latarse, and gave many recitals at places such as Salle Chopin-Pleyel. Rachmaninov declared him as ''a genius, more so than I am''. He was also regarded as a genius by Albert Einstein himself.

He later performed Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel, as well as his own works throughout the United States and Canada and at the age of 11, Mathieu won the first prize at the composition competition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He performed at Carnegie Hall and many other famous theatres.

After WWII, Mathieu went back to Paris to study some more, but found himself unhappy with his teachers and got bored. Unfortunately, Mathieu succumbed to alcoholism and died suddenly at the age of 39. He supposedly left more than 200 pieces behind him. [Linked Image]

Some additional info on him:

Lefebvre - André Mathieu
André Mathieu

His music:
3rd Piano Concerto (Quebec Concerto): Concerto de Québec
4th Piano Concerto: Espace Classique - 4e Concerto (Click on ''Regardez l'Enregistrement Intégral'')

Thought I'd make mention of him. I personally find his 4th concerto astonishing; especially for a 12 year old kid!

I know I'm reviving my own thread, but his 3rd concerto is now fully on Youtube, along with the 1st and 2nd movements of his 4th, although you can still watch the whole performance on the website in my first post, although I don't know if it can be accessed everywhere... They are simply beautiful in every sense...

3rd Concerto:
1st Mvt: Concert de Quebec - 1st Mvt
2nd Mvt: Concerto de Quebec - 2nd Mvt
3rd Mvt: Concerto de Quebec - 3rd Mvt

4th Concerto:
1st Mvt: 4th Piano Concerto - 1st Mvt Part1
4th Piano Concerto - 1st Mvt Part 2
2nd Mvt: 4th Piano Concerto - 2nd Mvt Part 1
4th Piano Concerto - 2nd Mvt Part 2

Why would you listen to music as old fashioned as that?

snobbyish, yet maybe helpful.

For a 20th century piece it's pretty 19th century sounding.

Well he was strongly inspired by Rachmaninov and Debussy... He absolutely hated modernism, he thought it was just random noises... so I'm guessing this is why it sounds very romantic...

So, if I want Rachmaninov I'll listen to Rachmaninov. Shame he didn't like Ravel I might have listened!

With grouchy critics and fellow posters like kbk it is a wonder that more people don't succumb to alcoholism...

Maybe it's me. I'm seeing how long I can delay putting the heating on. Three jumpers, two pair of wool socks and a pair wool trousers later...

So according to you, when one listens to Mozart it's the same as saying he's listening to Haydn because Mozart was influenced by him...
Anyway I just wanted to share Mathieu's music which I consider of very high quality, and I don't see why a 20th century composer absolutely has to compose modern music...
