Was just wondering if you guys are recording WAV or MP3 on your Zoom? I'm looking at my menu and I only see WAV not direct to MP3? (bouncing around cyberspace looking up details) Cheers  - Steve

Menu - Record Mode
12-mp3 modes
6 - wav modes
I've had mine about a year .... do not recall changing any special setting to get wav or mp3.
Go into record mode and cycle through the list with the Forward / Reverse arrows.

6 - wav modes Hmmm I only have WAV options, NO MP3.. Not sure if this is an issue or not but I'll keep digging. Thanks.. - Steve

Did you scroll down past the WAV formats? The MP3 ones should come after them.
Also, 4 channel mode doesn't record in MP3 so you only see the WAV formats. Stereo mode records in MP3 or WAV.

Also, 4 channel mode doesn't record in MP3 so you only see the WAV formats. Stereo mode records in MP3 or WAV. Thanks! Changing back to 2CH showed the MP3s in the menu. So do most use 4CH or 2CH since I can use Audacity to 'nomilize' the audio once recorded.. - Steve

I use Stereo Mode. I'm only recording one instrument and stereo mode (if I remember right. It's been a while  ) only records using the two mics at the front. 4 channel records using the two front mics and the two rear mics. It's used more for recording more than one instrument with the unit placed in the center. Other people might use it differently but this works for me.

TTigg – I look at it this way (and someone please correct me if I’m totally wrong about it): WAV vs. MP3 is like the digital camera equivalent of RAW vs. JPG. WAV files, like RAW files, are much larger and contain much more data, some of this data may be of little use. MP3 files, like JPG files, are compressed to make the file sizes smaller and some of this “may be useless†data is thrown away. You can always go from WAV to MP3 or RAW to JPG to take advantage of the file compression, but going the other way is pointless. Therefore I always shoot my digital pictures in RAW and make my digital recordings in WAV. Then when I want to send them out into cyberspace I make JPG or MP3 versions (always keeping my original uncompressed files). Of course this only makes sense if disk space is not a problem.
Now with that said, I’ve been considering switching to MP3 for recording because I find I rarely ever use the WAV files for anything other than making MP3 files (I get much more use out of my RAW digital image files).

Undone Makes sense -thanks. I'm going to try to get 2 different recordings (MP3, WAV) of the same noodling whilst connected line in to check it out. - SC

Undone I'd highly recommend recording to Wave and then converting to Mp3 with a stand alone program that uses a decent Mp3 encoder (i've read up recently and the latest LAME codec seems to offer the best conversion at the moment). There are some poor ones out there and some world leaders. They are usually free.. Relying on any old Mp3 converter is not a good idea.. Regards. Rimmer
