Greetings all

Currently on Kijiji there is a CLP950R being sold for $1050 ($1000 USD). Do any of you have an opinion on the quality of the 950 and the relative value.

Any help will be appreciated.

David

(Edit: for reference, sticker price on a CLP320 is $1948 ($1870 USD))

If you decide to pursue this DP, please include "playing" the keys with the power off in your audition. You'd want to confirm that there are no sticky keys. If this DP has been played a lot, it's also possible that the keys will be noisy when they're released. That can be handled with new felt, but repairs can be expensive, relative to the asking price.

I don't know about the price.

I sold my CLP950 about a month ago for about €600. It was almost 9 yrs old.

The keys were indeed louder (because of felt wear off I think) than they used to be, but as the buyer would play on it 90% of the time with headphones (because of the neighbours, this wasn't really an issue. But if you want to play without headphones, you'd better follow the advice of Fogvillelad. Noisy keys can be quite annoying to other people in the same room.

The action of my CLP950 is good, but not as good as new ones. The sound quality is good, but not as good as new ones.

New basic DP models in a cheaper range can be found with better piano sound and action at about €900-€1000.

A CLP-950 however has much better speakers than those new cheaper models and also includes some other sounds (EP,organ, string, etc.) and split and layer functions.

How old is the CLP950?

Thanks for the information. It largely matches my suspicions. Unfortunately there is not information about age of the keyboard.

It is a series CLP950R and has been used very little. It is in like new condition and located in Cochrane AB at ***. Paid $3200.00 new and asking $1050.00.

I think I will keep planning for the CLP340

Thanks again
David

According to Yamaha the CLP950 debuted in 2000. It was a good piano in its day, and you won't find a new one as good today for $1000. But the used market is tough. You might want to make a lower offer. (In general, the "willing" price is lower than the "asking" price.)

Question: Is the Kinji sale a local one? If not, be prepared to add a bundle in shipping charges.

Kijiji is the free classified ad service of E-Bay and is local to a number of communities in North America (I don't know about Europe). In this instance, the keyboard is about an hour away from home.

If it's only an hour away - and used very little - it's worth auditioning. It's not unusual for people to buy a Clavinova but not pursue lessons.

As has already been posted, the asking price is just that.

If budget is less of an issue, then the CLP340 is a good choice.

It's a buyer's market.

How will you be using the CLP950? Even if you get it cheap (and I suspect this will not sell for $1,000) if it is not what you need it is not a bargain.

Older pianos make great MIDI controls to use with software instruments. The 950 has good enough speakers and you could route the computer's sound through them

But if you just need a good piano to learn with you can get that for $500 in a new Casio, Korg.
