I tuned for Sandra Wright Shen this past weekend when a friend had a conflicting appointment. I shamefully admit to never having heard of her before this, even though she lives in my area....

I won't take credit for the tuning on this D, but her rendition of this piece really moved me. I've it played so many times, and even played it myself at one time, but this version made me listen to it in a whole new light. I had to share it with y'all.

Sandra Wright Shen "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"

Nice tuning, whoever did it!

Sounds really redundant. My goodness beautiful playing, but people say "new age" music is redundant...this is crazy...it's like hearing a verse over and over and over, and over....

"Jesu" was originally written for a choir and transcribed for piano by Myra Hess, which would explain the repetitive nature of the piece. It IS a challenge for a pianist to make this interesting and beautiful. If you listen closely you will hear the different melodies accentuated at different times during the performance.

New age music is considered boring by some because of the lack of key changes, or change of dynamics. Much of it supposed to be "ambient" music and isn't so interesting if you listen to it closely.

Comparing Bach with new age is like comparing a 7 course gourmet meal with a Whopper....

Well, “Unchained Melody” would seem too repetitive if you don’t know the words, too:

Jesu, joy of man’s desiring,
Holy wisdom, love most bright;
Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring
Soar to uncreated light.
Word of God, our flesh that fashioned,
With the fire of life impassioned,
Striving still to truth unknown,
Soaring, dying round Thy throne.

Through the way where hope is guiding,
Hark, what peaceful music rings;
Where the flock, in Thee confiding,
Drink of joy from deathless springs.
Theirs is beauty’s fairest pleasure;
Theirs is wisdom’s holiest treasure.
Thou dost ever lead Thine own
In the love of joys unknown.

“Uncreated light” what a thought!

The arrangement that was posted is much nicer than the one I have (and performed much better than what I can do, also!)

I always wonder about that triplet/duplet rhythm thing in the middle. It is not used elsewhere in the piece and there are dotted lines connecting bass and treble notes. I take this to mean that those notes are played at the same time, regardless of how the beat value of the notes line up. So I don’t know if playing the duplet as quarter and eighth notes of a triplet, which I do partly because it is easier, is really correct or not.

Oh yes, great tuning. So good I didn't even notice it!

Exactly.
New age music or world music is mostly constructed of volume instrumentals and is primarily used for background distraction rather than attention –focused concert material, classical being the comparison used.

Thanks for posting the text, Jeff. The tuning IS good, but I did NOT do it. This video was made in Chicago.
