After working at Aria variata BWV989.......today I started The French Suites (purchased a Könemann edition this afternoon for € 2 in a dump bookstore....) .........and again I was very impressed of Bach-music.....  Allemande Suite 1 D-minor and Allemande Suite 5 G-major....so beautiful..... Highly recommended.... Best regards, Johan B

yup! i love the 4th (Eb), the allemande could be seen or played as romantic music.

Bach's French Suites are a collection of some of the finest pieces of music ever written.
All of Bach's music is incredible, timeless, and always interesting. I can never get bored of Bach. Its just not possible.

The 2nd suite is one of my favourite pieces. Angela Hewitt's recording is beautiful.

and after you played through them, try the English suites, and then the Partita's, and then... ...or in opposite order. The partitas are really less difficult than the English suites, but all of them are phenomenal works no matter which you choose.

I have a book of English suites Nos. 1-3. I don't know their categorization numbers off the top of my head, though...
I really want to learn them! The Sarabande in G Minor from Suite 3 is absolutely GORGEOUS. (Sorry, I know this topic is about French suites, not English suites, but still!)

by the way, if we're diverging anyways, i just uploaded a transcription of my favourite bach performance: Ivo Pogorelich playing English Suite II - Prelude http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL6Yi2zZSSwthe tempo is very fast and some might reject it, but i think it suits the piece, and the performance is still extremely musical. i cut a repetition (2:43) that i don't like and transcribed the performance (especially dynamics). what do you think? ps: listening to the violin sonata transcription now, so far liking it ^^

I don't agree, but then, perhaps that says a bit about each of our abilities (at least to a degree I suppose).

no it says a lot about knowledge of these wonderful pieces, the 6th partita counts as one of the most difficult pieces out of his pen, it dwarfs the rest.

makes sense because the partitas are the last suites he composed, the english ones being the first.
fun fact: bach labeled the partitas his Op. 1, being published as Clavier-Ãœbung I (Keyboard Exercise I).

indeed, once did an op.1 program: Bach 1st partita, Mozart KV 1, Chopin Rondo op.1, Berg sonata, Brahms first sonata, 'they' liked it.

For me, the 6th English suite (dminor) is the most difficult...especially the Gigue (damn it's difficult!) The 6th partita is huge and complicated, but technically not too bad. I find the 4th partita much more taxing.

haha, probably everyone has 'his' most difficult bach suite.
