My piano teacher gave me this...told me to work on doing it for 2 octaves for now and to work up to 4 octaves. What does this strenghten? It seems to me that it works the muscle in two different directions at the same time creating a kind of torque which would seem to me to promote tension.
She did tell me to make sure that I rotate my wrist while I do it.

Any input?

repertoire for the moment:
bach: prelude and fugue in b-, book i (WTC)
mozart - sonata in D+, k. 576
schumann (transc. liszt) - widmung
coulthard - image astrale

It looks like an exercise in double notes "as they come" which is very hard to get very fast. Some very difficult repertoire have alternating thirds or fourths in them, and this exercise will help. Plus it probably helps other things too, like stamina.

This is typical of exercises purported to be about "finger-independence".

In particular, it was probably adapted/inspired from Isidor Phillip's "Exercises for the independence of fingers"

Personally Im not fond of "finger-centric" approaches to technique, though...because I find that they cause the student to ignore all of the other parts of the body involved, usually resulting in tense playing. Like any exercise, its benefits and drawbacks depend to a significant degree on how you approach it.

Your teachers directions to involve the wrist will certainly help combat this tendency though!

Yes, I can only do this for 7 repetitions (up to starting on a B natural) without feeling pain - which is mostly in my left hand ring finger which has a tendency to curl under itself when I play. The exercise is certainly not evenly voiced..I've been told to stop when it hurts but to try again the next day to develop the strength.
