The earbuds I use now have been very durable despite much abuse...they cost me $40. Forget the brand, but they have Kevlar reinforcement and a heavy rubberized jack. And they sound great with sound isolation and neodymium magnets.

With a little skill and a few tools you can repair the wires yourself quite easily, if it's just them getting broken in some parts, and not the "speaker" part breaking down.

i have a smaller ipod, but an I-tunes library that is huge. i manage the entries with playlists.

mp3s sound like plastic imitations of sound but I am GRATEFUL for the chance to particularly listen to music that I learn. I sometimes (often) play along with the recordings. This process has accelerated my learning almost exponentially, particularly for Bach, which for me is hard to memorize/hear.

Never, ever, ever convert MP3s to a higher bitrate. You will lose wuality, not gain it.

The reason I use lossless is not necessarily because of the quality (I admit that most people probably couldn't tell the difference from a good MP4.) I use it because it's future proof. It can be easily converted to any other lossless format with no loss of data whatsoever, and as a library backup can be used to create high quality MP4s as if from the original CD. It does take up a lot of space (My complete shostakovich symphonies is 3.16GB hehe) but I am swimming in hard drive space so I don't really care.

mp4 is a better format than mp3 anyway; no idea why one would want to convert to mp3 from a better format anyway.

You should never convert from one lossy format to another if you can help it, even if MP4 is more efficient.

I'm aware of that fact. smile I use Apple Lossless (.m4a) for all my ripped music. I never bother to convert again because I have a 500 GB hard drive and a 32 GB iPod touch.
