This piece (Op. 24 no 9 in D flat) has a section that I believe would be considered a cadenza. There is a marking in the score that says a cut can be made from here-here if desired.

I have only heard this section played as indicated in the score. My question is, would you consider changing this section like a traditional cadenza either in modifying it slightly or composing your own version?

I've considered it but it would be contingent on me coming up with something even slightly creative. I'm going to try and learn the original first and then see what happens.

Listen to as many professional recordings of this as you can get your hands on. If they play it as written, then it's probably more accepted to do so. Also, if this is just for your own enjoyment or for a general public concert, then feel free to either cut it or do your own cadenza. However, if for auditions or competition, I would stick to what is generally accepted.

What edition do you have?

In my edition of the score (Breitkopf), there are no cut signs on either side of the cadenza. I would be very reluctant to consider this passage as an ad lib. cadenza, in the same way that I would be loathe to replace the candenzas in Liszt's "Liebestraum (No. 3), Mozart's "Fantasia in d minor", or the Scriabin "Nocturne for the Left Hand alone," all of which have written-out cadenzas in the score.

I would very much recommend it being played "as written."

I don't know the edition because I got a printout from my teacher years back. This version gives an optional cut between measures 40 and 62. I'll try to scan it and post how it's notated.

I agree I wouldn't make any changes to the pieces you mentioned. I hadn't thought of it that way.

I definitely won't cut it so it looks like I'll stick to what's written (assuming I finish learning it). Even though it's unlikely anyone will hear it but me I like to pretend I would play it for someone.

If I do finish it and deviate from the score I'll serve up a recording to get your thoughts.
