So, I couldn't find the edition for Mephisto Waltz other than the Busoni transcription. I accidentally ordered it. Is it a good edition? It's the only one Schirmer has... smirk

It would be an arrangement, with additions to Liszt's original music. As such, it will probably be good for what it is. I suspect it is a reprint of the original Breitkopf edition.

I remember that Busoni actually re-arranged it....Garrick Ohlsson (spelling?) remembers hearing Horowitz play the Mephisto Waltz, and saying something like "some parts were from Liszt, some from the Busoni, and some parts were his", implying Busoni made an arrangement of it.

Well I made a comparison using the copies on imslp and the scores are very different...I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Do people use the Busoni edition more? And it's the only edition that Schirmer offers and is the only edition on sheetmusicplus...

Also, is the Dover Edition any good?

I don't know about Busoni version(s). But as far as Liszt is concerned, there are actually 4 Mephisto Waltz:

Henle is my favorite publisher for most anything:

The Busoni you ordered is a transcription of Liszt's orchestral version of "Mephisto Waltz." It incorporates all the differences of that version and in many ways sounds not much like the piano edition. It's also hard as heck, definitely worse than the Liszt original. The Dover edition is Liszt's original version, and comes with other pieces as a collection.

So, should I order the Dover edition?

Edit: Also, what I don't understand is why Schirmer doesn't have a copy of the original Liszt version... =/

Kapell plays the Liszt original, except for the final flourish where he uses Busoni's more effective ending. Works very well.

What you order depends on what you want to play.

I have the Peters edition which I believe is the Liszt original piano score. That threw me or a loop when I was listening to a recording by Horowitz I believe, and it was very different from what I had.
